The absolute best satsuma ever tasted came from a tree at the LSU orchard - named #5. |

Re: What is the Best Satsuma you have Tasted?
For a named variety the Owari was the best that I have ever tasted that was from my little tree two years ago. The fruit were tiny, but really quite good. I left them on the tree for long period of time prior to harvesting. No fruit on it last year. This yr removed some shade and it is full of blossoms again. I have never got anything off my Kimborough which last year was almost overtaken with the rootstock crowding out the graft. I protected my three citrus trees this year from the cold and they suffered little if any damage. Same for my ice cream banana plant that now has it first leaf fully out there and I am waiting for more leaves now.

I saw some Owari @ one of the nurseries locally..
Never heard of no Pineapple Naval, or Amber Sweet.. Sounds like Marketing to a Sweet tooth, or along those means.. :^) |

The owari took the cold last winter like a champ. It got down to 15-17 degrees and it did not lose its established leaves. Its pushing new growth and flowering now.

I have an Armstrong that's may or may not come back this year but it was delicious last year, fruited the first year I got it from Home Depot. Darkman has a Freemont Tangerine that's really tasty. Hope this helps.

I think Darkman has an Oarwi? that did very well last winter. He also had another tasty variety that did very well- Darkman?? can you provide info |
Re: What is the Best Satsuma you have Tasted?
TJ....Hate to hear about Darkman's Freemont tangerine. I'm thinking about trying the "Owari" if my Armstrong doesn't make it.

I hear Owari was a survivor from last winter's blast - don't think I have ever tasted one. Darkman has another suma variety XenShi? He says it shrugged off the cold with minor damage and is a good tasting suma... Charles? any satsuma recommendations? TJ |
Re: What is the Best Satsuma you have Tasted?
The meyer lemon also made it through last winter, very few tips of branches were burnt. It lost almost all of its leaves but it has grown them all back now and is flowering.

Re: What is the Best Satsuma you have Tasted?
Hi Guys sorry I have been out of pocket lately.
Owari is a good cold hardy variety. Kimbrough is a sport of Owari and from my observations is more cold hardy than Owari and has budded well and set fruit. Owari did suffer some significant damage. Kimbrough much less so. My least damaged tree was Xie Shan (She Shawn). It suffered almost no damage and is loaded with flowers and/or fruit at this time. It is an early season bearer and I should get excellent fruit this year. It has consistently been ranked number one by taste test. My Fina Sodea clementine lost 60% of it's leaves but quickly regrew them, had a heavy bloom and currently has a very good fruit load. My Parson Brown oranges was defoliated but has since regrew from major branches. It will not fruit this year. I believe that I have lost my Fremont tangerine which had excellent tatste and possibly my Sunburst another excellent tangerine. My Hamlin oranges, Cara Cara navel oranges, Pokon satsuma and Orlando tangelos are also dead. With the exception of the Ponkon these were my heaviest producers last year and all had excellent flavor. My Meyer lemons look to be regrowing from the lower limbs. These trees were my wifes favorites and she eats them fresh. My huge twenty-five year old grapefruit has resprouted from major limbs but has been attacked by the Ambrosia beeetle and may not survive. This tree was at least twenty feet tall with a trunk diameter of over twelve inches. The fruit on this tree was incredible. Best grapefruit I and many others had every tasted. It was a seedling and may be lost forever now. It was large sweet pink and seedless. I will replant. This was a one in one hundred year storm. Undoubtedly the Xie Shan was the least effected by the storm. It is available from Harris Citrus Nursery by mail order and they can ship out of the state of Florida. THIS WAS ALL PREVENTBLE BUT I HAD NOT COMPLETED MY FREEZE PREVENTION IRRIGATION THAT I SHOULD HAVE HAD FINISHED. I AM WORKING ON IT NOW AND THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. STUPID ME! |
Re: What is the Best Satsuma you have Tasted?
The Xie Shan isn't listed on their website.. Great Report there Charles.. :^)
|
Re: What is the Best Satsuma you have Tasted?
I called Harris and spoke with Ruth. She stated the Xie Shan will be ready in June. The shipping on four trees is only slightly more than one and the trees are twenty dollars. These are small trees but will grow with great vigor easily catching and surpassing trees that were in three gallon pots. I'll be ordering my replacement trees soon.
