Hiya Re: My Aero~Garden...

Thanks JaNan!

Your stuff's looking great too. Love the peppers. Boy, those sure got big fast.

I tried to get a shot of the first tiny micro tomato, but I'm not sure if you can see it still hiding in the pod. The blossom dropped and left behind a little nub at the top of the plant...

There are a lot more buds developing now.

Today is water changing and nutrient adding day!!!

I usually do it every Sunday.

My "Marble" plant is loaded with opening blossoms everywhere today...

How adorable are these two little guys that will open in a couple days...

There are now lots of little marbles all over the plant where the blossoms have dropped, but this is the biggest one and here it is today...

Micro-tom is just packing on buds and blossoms. The tomatoes should grow and ripen quickly under these lights...

"Little Blue" is doing super great...

Underneath the leaves are lots of buds...

I just LOVE the purple and bluish purple that these two plants of yours have. They really look like showcase plants they are so perfect. Everytime I look at your pictures I think they can't get any better, yet they do each time. I want mine to look like that!

Here is my little MicroTom today - It was the first of your seeds that I put in the AG and today is the seventh day and I could just pinch it, it is so darned cute! Sorry it is a bit blurry, the camera was focusing on the fuzz on the stem!

I will get this posted and go get a few pictures of the others! ~J

Wink Re: My Aero~Garden...

Oh thanks so much JaNan. I really am as amazed as you are with my plants in this system. I didn't expect them to be this successful. They are growing so perfectly for me.

I can tell I'm going to have a whole whack of marble fruits very soon...there's so many blossoms. My "little blue" is about to go into full bloom as well!

Not to worry JaNan...your plants will be every bit as beautiful. You just sowed your seeds a bit later than me, that's all. Just let stuff keep growing in there and you'll soon see the same beauty that I'm seeing.

I sure love the blue/purple leaves too. That Marble plant is so cool. I have a feeling it's going to be on my list of favorites in the end. I just love it and am enjoying it immensely. What a plant!

Hope you saw the pic of the Winterberry plant that I posted today, so you could see how pretty and red the leaves will be when the plant gets cold. So glad you plantd some in the A~G.

So great that your Micro-Tom came up so fast JaNan!

You won't believe how fast it grows and develops buds. It's astounding!

All the stuff you're growing will grow very quickly, so no worries. Things take off and get going so fast in the A-G I find.

These are the petunias, you can see their teeny tiny little cotyledon leaves now:

Mixed cornflower with another swelling:

I did see your Winterberry and love the redness of the new leaves! I think the Winterberry seeds I have are swelling and a couple have grow tails - nothing from the Little Blue yet but it has changed color:

The French Vanilla are already getting their second set of leaves:

I took the larger peppers out of the AG this morning, put them in soil, and started a few more of your seeds. The Beautyberry, Royal Red lettuce, Masquerade Pepper, and Rainbow Chard.

These are so pretty:

I like that the Royal Empress is getting another set of leaves:

The Royal Empress is so cute! It looks so healthy and happy. These plants we grow in our systems must think they're in plant heaven when they emerge from their shells!

Those marigolds will grow quickly and if you keep them together, you'll have to rip apart the sponge to separate them! Now is the time to decide...are you growing one in the A-G JaNan...or both elsewhere? If one is staying in the A-G, take the second one out right away. Then you don't have to worry about ripping any roots, nor hardening the seedling off.

I just don't want your stuff to die on you so that's why I mention it. It'll be easier for you if you take them out while they're young.

Just leave the purple basil (gorgeous by the way ) where it all is to grow together in one pod. Some plants will be much bigger than the others that will lag behind at the base of the bigger ones. It'll still be pretty though and basil isn't something you have to be too fussy about anyway. When I grow it in pots I stuff it full with many plants.

So glad you saw the winterberry red leaf shots today. It's the cold that makes them that way so our ones in our aero-garden will likely be green until they feel the cold in the Fall. They are self-fertile like pepper & tomato plants and do not require pollination to get berries. You will love this tiny shrublet. It's slow growing and only reaches 4 feet wide when mature. It's ideal for pots and even hanging baskets because it trails and creeps down the pot!

An amazing plant and it's one of my most favorites, next to Holly. It's so much LIKE Holly though and l think that's why I love it. Plus the fact that it's the authentic wintergreen plant and the berries smell like wintergreen and so do the leaves. It's so cheerful and happy looking in the wintertime.

If you wanna enjoy it in a pot indoors over winter, it likes a cool windowsill, or to even be put back outside for a couple days each week to satisfy it. It's an evergreen and it likes to be cold but it grows nicely through the warmer months too and sets its berries for fall and winter display. It prefers acidic soil to thrive. Any food for Rhododendron works well.

Ok I'll stop rambling but I just love that shrublet and so glad you now have it too JaNan.

Oh yeah and your Petunia sprouts are adorable. Again, remember that just one of those seeds will grow into a huge branching Petunia plant so you may wanna thin them in a week or so. They grow fast as well so you don't want to wait until the roots go too deep.

Gonna post another shot in a minute here...

Oh and I had to re-sow a blue cornflower seed because I killed my other seedling by accident while trying to poke it into place with a toothpick. I snapped off the head!

No biggie, I sowed another seed last night.

Yes, I do think they are in plant heaven!

OK, now the French Vanilla is a large marigold right? I was going to let the seedlings get good and strong and then plant them, because I thought they would be too big to stay in the AG. The petite marigolds, I was going to leave in the AG, because they only get 6 inches tall. I thought it would be pretty with different colors, so I would have to have more than one plant. Same with the little petunias. I wanted a riot of color! So, the pods really can't accommodate more than one plant at a time? I could put them into a seed starting dome, but I can't just throw them away.

I don't mind planting the sponge with the plants. I had to do that with the peppers this morning. By the time I separated the roots the sponge would be all torn up anyway. I'll just get more sponges for the new seeds.

You would be proud of me though! Yesterday I actually pinched off the new precious little leaves coming out the top of the chocolate mint so they would get bushier! YAY! It was tough though! Then I ate them! I had chocolaty minty fresh breath all morning! They weren't big enough to make a cup of tea. ~J

Oh I'm so glad you have chocolate mint JaNan...that is going to be one special treat. Mint grows quickly and before you know it you'll be overrun! I used to love to harvest my new mint shoots every couple of weeks to dry the bundles for tea. I can't wait to get some of that from you later.

Oh yeah, this is about aero-garden! Sorry about that but you got me excited with talk about that chocolate mint. I could rave on forever. Does it smell delicious? Oh that is too cool. Great that you pinched it to make it bushy.

So yeah, the vanilla marigolds grow big but still perfect & ideal for pots so you can keep them out of the rain. The blooms are so big and heavy that rain will beat them down. A sheltered area or a pot is best for them. They are so breathtakingly beautiful when they start to really get going and there's more than 10 blooms on the plant at once. I love growing Aurora hot peppers around their base to make things more interesting. An equivalent would be your Marble pepper JaNan.

You can grow more than one plant in a pod but keep this in mind...

It's like trying to stuff too many plants into one pot...there's only so much room. If one pod has 4 or 5 plants in it also, it will be hogging the nutrients from the rest of the plants in other pods due to the giant mass root system overtaking everything else in the basin below.

If you want all the colors, you should grow one in each pod to get the best growth and bloom. If you want plants that are competing and struggling to get food, where the dominant plant will outgrow the other...this is what could happen from growing too many plants in one pod.

At best, I'd suggest growing no more than 2 plants in one pod if you must...I'm doing that with the blue cornflower and dwarf zinnia in one pod.

However JaNan, it's your aero-garden and you have a right to experiment. I just want you to have success and not disappointment that's all, but the very best gardening advice I ever got was...

"Stop Listening to Other Gardeners"!!!

So do your thing JaNan, and you'll learn from the best teachers of all...trial & error.

Cool Re: My Aero~Garden...

Oh stop...you're making me drool!

I want some of that so bad! I mean tonight! If I was there, I'd be snipping leaves like crazy. Did you know the flavor will be more intense if the leaves are dried? Yup, they will be.

That is so healthy looking JaNan, and so appetizing. I really am salivating just thinking about the delicious smell you must be whiffing when you brush those leaves.

Dry some of the leaves and crumble them into vanilla ice cream, to really taste the flavor. Mmmmmm...yummy.

You're so lucky to have it.

Why you!

Sherry have you really never smelled or tasted it? You'll have some too don't you worry!

I confess I was trying to make you drool!

I have to tell you I do touch it all the time just to smell it. Especially since I am at the AG's several times a day!

I am going to plant them in a large pot, though truthfully I wouldn't mind if it took over here at my place. It IS that heavenly!

Yep, I can see some variegation in it too now! You're going to love it too, I just know it!!!!

Thumbs up Re: My Aero~Garden...

Well actually Zac sent me some chocolate mint tea leaves in a can that he bought somewhere and when I opened it up I couldn't believe the smell.

I made tea with it the same night and it was just delicious! I still have some left because I've used it very sparingly. To think I will be growing my own is just too awesome. Thanks so much for sharing it JaNan. It really looks so healthy and appetizing. Love it.

I would want it to take over too, and plan on making several pots of it once I get your cuttings going. Cuttings root extremely easily for mints.

You should post your shot and we should discuss things further in the herb thread too.

That Swiss Chard is gorgeous and the stems are super brightly colored. I've grown it many times, in pots and in the garden. It's got excellent flavor too.

Your micro-tom won't take long to grow and put on a crop.

Great that you're growing some of the ruby red lettuce. I think it'll be super red if you leave it in the A-G.

Here's the "Jigsaw" tonight. One of the new leaves developing looks like it's gonna have lots of white in it...

I think I will leave the lettuce in one of the AG's. I have had the pink swiss chard before and it is beautiful and I love it. I think if it doesn't get too tall, I may leave ONE of the pinks in the AG and pot the others! (see I'm learning ). I think the red lettuce and the hot pink chard would look good growing together, don't you?

I love that the JigSaw is getting color! It should keep getting more and more as it grows for you. You just wait and see, you are going to love it as much as Little Blue and Marbles!!!!

Oh, and the little MicroTom will stay for sure!

I'm liking the Jigsaw plant and enjoying watching it develop. I'm excited to hear you say I might like it as much as the Marble plant. That's one tough to beat!

I have a new little Alpine strawberry seedling to replace my old one, that came up today. I'll be putting it into the aero-garden next week...
