I'm pretty sure from reading on the net that the farm raised are fed via the root system and that they are heavy feeders. That's the way I feed mine. I water them mostly by hosing down the leaves like any other bromeliad though. I'm sure you could feed by spraying the leaves too but I have no clue what mixture or how often.
