Several years ago, I planted some calla bulbs. I didn't think the bulbs would make it, in the ground, over the winter, so my intention was to dig them up, and bring them inside, at the end of the season. I never got around to it. They have come up every year since but, for the last few years, they don't bloom. (just leaves) Any ideas, hints? Thanks.

Can you remember to mulch or cage them over the winter? I took a fig from MD (hot zone 7) to a zone 5ish Brrhio. It lived but died back every year without flowering though I did cage it annually. When the house was sold a couple of years later, it was finally setting a breba crop. If they survive, plants can acclimate; it just takes a few seasons or so IME.

If your winters have been harsh then I think they just might need time to recoup.
Two years ago I planted some tropical callas (zone 9B) in my garden, between my clumps of white callas, Z. aethiopic,. because I didn't know what to do with them (I'm not into tender tropicals or houseplants and I got them as a gift). They flowered nicely during the summer and then died back in the fall, and nothing happened last spring but then I didn't expect anything to happen. But lo and behold after the last winter we had - which was harsh - I have them now coming up. Whether I'll get flowers I don't know, but they did survive and they look really healthy. |
