Hey there,

I have well aged dairy and chicken manure and wanted to know what's the best way to add it? near the base of the plant as as mulch or do i need to mix it in with the soil? I am worried that i might damage the roots if i dig close to the base.

You could dig it in lightly to the top couple of inches or so instead of digging it in deep and that way you should avoid root damage.

We put a truck load of well cured chicken manure around our banana plants when they were still not half grown .The results were all good. 18 months after adding the chicken manure we've broadcast synthetic potash.All the plants are doing really well. We remove unwanted suckers and green de-leaf regularly.

Thank you both Hoanui and Narnia. When i first planted my bananas I wasn't quite aware that they needed to be planted far away from each other so I now have 4 plants growing really close to each other and probably too tall to transplant!

I am trying to go organic as much as possible. Is aged manure and compost good enough? how often do i need them to my plants?

I just add it right to the surface like a mulch.

You will probably want to add a liquid fertilizer in your mix as well as compost and manure. I add more manure when ever the pile starts to sink, about twice a year. How ever I will use a liquid fertilizer every 8 - 10 days depending on the time of year.

Thank you Worm_Farmer. Can you point me to a couple of liquid fertilizers you use? I live in India so might not have access to the same thing but would be good to know all the same.

for me..i use rabbit manure.. in fall i have it spaded
under with shredded leaves and straw..then let it decompose over
winter..(vegy garden).. for other use.. i make manure tea..
which i put on everything.. not my only fertilizing.. ive found
i was probably starving my EE and bananas..LOL i tend to under
fertilize my plants(weak solutions)..
last yr..all my tropicals just popped.. i bumped up my fertilizing
and they showed the appreciation..
