my water bananas

This past winter my water bananas did well in the basement in water all winter. I brought them out and put them in my water gardens. Last week we seperated them and repotted. We placed them in the water gardens again. They seem to be doing well. Here is a pic you can see 2 water bananas behind the flamingo.

What is weird my water bananas did better in my basement this winter in water then my smaller blood bananas planted in pots under lights.. They all died back, so guess I watered them too much. Figure that one out?

Hi Vicky,

I hope, that all these people, who are so worried about over-watering, read your very interesting
contribution. While bananas in their natural habitat not regularly get their feet bathed in standing
water, unless they grow next to rice fields, they do live in humid and often quite soggy
environments.

Thank you for posting this. I will save the URL of this for future reference, because concerns
about over-watering are cropping up here in a never ending stream, even fed by people, who are
very knowledgeable about bananas.

I would not submerge a bare corm in water, and I doubt, that you do that, but once a head of
leaves is established, there is no longer any concern.

BTW, I love your water garden.

Thanks Olaf. I bought my first water banana in 2007 at a big greenhouse. I still have some of those bananas. In 2008 I decided to try and do my own. I took a pup and I do not remember which banana. I put it in a saucer of water. Slowly over the next month I raised the water level until it was over the top of the pot. It has been in water ever since.

here are some of my other bananas they are doing okay now but some died back to the bulb

your water garden.

Unfortunately I no longer have a small pond available. I filled the one which would have been
suitable in and made a "tropical" planter out of it and our shore of the large pond, of which we
own only a small part drops off rapidly to a depth of between 5 and 7 feet. When I talked to you
first (?), I thought of contriving something which would float on a tether, but I abandoned it as
too complex. The only small pond I have left is useless for growing anything, because it is
inside a gazebo, which is now completely overgrown with grapevines. Nice though for warm
evenings.
