Help! Plants might be too tall!

Hi! Now that I just started to bringing in the plants for the winter... I didn’t really think about this problem before. What if some of my plants might be too tall for my house? I think my ceiling is only 8 or 9 feet tall. You have to understand that since I don’t live in the tropics all my plants have to come in. I dig them up and put in pots to bring them in for winter. Incidentally causes the plants to be even taller than they were to start with! Also I don’t have a greenhouse and my garage (which is tall enough) is not heated. Could I just cut them down half way or just a couple of feet? Will doing this affect my ability to grow bananas in the near future? Could I some how heat my garage short of putting in a gas line? Do I need to find someone else’s house with taller ceilings than I have? You know some of the varieties get to be anywhere from 6’ to 25’ tall. I mean don’t they have to be that tall in order to produce the fruit? I was afraid that after all this I might not be able to get bananas off my plants after all. What do you think?

Living in a 9B zone, you shouldn't have to bring them inside; just mulch heavy around the base. Then select pups from some of the hard to-get varieties to bring inside as a backup should you have an unusually severe winter. The in-ground bananas will have an early start in the spring without transplant problems. .... this what i do in zone 8A.

But you could easily store some of the nanas bare-root on their side in the garage. Then cover with a tarp if night temps are dropping below freezing. Save all the work potting and moving into the house. The plants are going dormant anyway.

Thanks for the info! I’m sorry I should have mentioned that I live in Ohio which is zone 6A. So I do have to bring things in anyway! You’re right about leaving them bareroot! I guess I never thought of that! Hey I learned something else on here!
