Banana Seed Germination Forum As one of the toughest seeds in the plant kingdom to figure out the keys to germination success with, this is a forum with banana seed germination tips. Please entitle posts like "Musa balbisiana," or "Musa cheesmani," etc. People would then post a reply under that heading, sharing their germination successes (and failures), what materials and methods they used, germination percentage, etc.

Default Can I nick Banana seed like Cannas?

I got some Musa sikkimensis Red Tiger seed in the mail today, can I nick the seed and soak it like I do my Canna seed? Or will the nicking kill it.

you can do that. i dont know much but it depends on the specie of banana and the age of your seeds.
im trying to germinate some
Musa Cheesmanii
Thompsonii
balbisiana gigantae
acuminata spp. borneo
and yunnen-forgothowtospellit-sis
and my acuminata seeds were soaked in water for 2 days (didn't nick them)
and one germinated 4 weeks later

again it depends on the seed and if your providing it with heat.
Good luck

I used Nail clippers, just cut the edge of the seed till a little white shows, Thats what I do with Canna seed and they sometimes start sprouting in 24 hours. I hear Banana seed is much more stubborn but I hope it speeds things up a bit.

This is a Canna seed I germinated, first pic is after 48 hours, second is 4 days later. Too bad Bananas wont germinate like this.
