Very interesting. What is the reason though? Why not just plant in soil and water?

I don't get why to cut the bottom part off. And then to regrow roots on it?
I did grow a corm in a bag once by accident, minus the cutting part and the hot water. I dug one in the fall, chopped the top off of it because I broke it anyway, and put it into a pro-mix bag, intending to pot it up the next day. It was right at dark and getting cold that night and I didn't want to mess with potting it up right then. No lights in the greenhouse!
I threw it under the bench in the greenhouse and promptly forgot about it. Piled some old flats and pots and more promix bags on top of it and never gave it a thought until in the middle of summer I noticed it had started growing. The darn thing was about 2 feet tall under there-- and then I potted it up.
