what is the best website to buy a banana plant on the internet? ( dwarf cavendish and musa double)

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

You're bound to have differing opinions on this one. I've had good experience with Going Bananas, nice people there. banana-tree.com is in Easton Pa , close and reliable. Green earth is good I think they're banana- plant.com but you can google it or someone here will know it. Stokestropicals is good as well. Good luck.

I just placed an order with "Edible Landscaping Online" they have the SDC on sale for $8 in a quart pot. It's my first order with them so I'm not able to comment on the quality.

There is a list of these on a thread somewhere in here.

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

Okay, I just did a quick bit of research for those two varieties based on the sites I have bookmarked. I would say Northern Tropics will be the cheapest, but I'm not entirely sure what their shipping is, or if they have a minimum order. Another site that has good deals on those varieties is Green Earth. You can get both plants, plus shipping for $31. The main advantage of Green Earth over Northern Tropics is that you will receive 14" plants rather than 5" plants. Just something to think about if you want to get growing fast. I've purchased a few plants from GE and they have great prices and reliable service.

Hope that helps out!

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

I just purchased and recieved 1 SDC and 1 Ice Cream from GreenEarth (banana-plants.com) and both were 12" or better and very healthy and got both for around 27 bucks with shipping. Check out my pics (i believe i uploaded them) of them the day I recieved and potted them. Logees has a decent reputation. But, they are on the pricey end. I purchased a Mahoi and a Dwarf Lady Finger the same day as the SDC and IC and still haven't recieved the plants and the cost was around 53 buck with shipping for those.

Everything is all based upon user preference and experiences, so far, my preference is to GreenEarth at the moment.

Good Luck!

The plants are very healthy and have grown a lot already in the month and a half I've had em.

Can't believe I didn't mention Northern Tropics. My 2 biggest plants , Ice cream and Bordelon came from Sandy there. Highly reccomended.

You can't go wrong with Martha's-Plants-Trees on eBay. I bought my very first nanners from her. Reasonable prices, expert packaging, and fast shipping.

I can speak for Martha's & Northern Tropic's Both are Straight up great, Awesome plants and great prices, best of both worlds & you are helping out a small business owner not some big box store who is owned by who know who or where. I spend all my loot on naners with both. But they do more than banana's!

OK Sandy & Martha i'm ready for spokesperson salary nnow. J/K

Damn, really? I got screwed on shipping....TOTALLY not Green Earth's fault though (I realize that and therefore, still recommend them highly). USPS just hosed me. I ordered on Sat. so that they would for sure go out Mon....and I didn't receive them till Mon. It was pretty cold all weekend even (20 degrees or so), I was anxious and worried all week and even hassled the mail workers a bit (not really, I was very polite, actually) to see if they came to my local post office that weekend even....nothing. Priority mail is basically the typical method of banana shipment...I just got unlucky...typical, really. LOL.

Despite all that, my 'naners arrived very healthy and not damaged in any way. Despite all my frustration and anxiety, I was very satisfied.

Just wanted to say I have ordered from Greenearth. Good price, fast shipment, healthy plants. But I did not get what I ordered. The plants came with a small label on the pot but when they grew up they were not what I ordered. I called ted and sent pictures and he Identified them confirming
what I thought. Now I am fine with that because they grew into very nice plants. I would recommend them maybe It was just a fluke Greenearth "Apple" Identified as Dwarf Red

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

This is difficult to answer since it depends on what you're looking for and what sort of budget you have. Since you're in a colder climate, you might want to start off with a large plant if it's in your budget. Jon ("pitangadiego") runs Encanto Farms Nursery in San Diego and has many large plants. I bought some 5 gallon plants when I was there in June 2008 and some gave pups within a month or so. Shipping for larger plants would be higher, but it might be worth it for you. Look at the bottom of ENCANTO FARMS NURSERY Available plants. Also, I am quite sure you'll know for sure what you're getting when you buy a plant from Jon as these are all from plants he's been growing himself for some time.

Apologies if this is "bringing the tone down", but I have had quite a bit of success buying plants on .................................................. Ebay.

Yes, I did say Ebay. Not quite sure what it is like over in the USA but Ebay (UK) has had some good listings.

A couple of years back I bought 20 (TWENTY) Basjoo pups for £12.00 (about $18.00) including P&P. Unfortunately took them to Spain and lost every single one due to the coldest Christmas (plants totally unprotected) in 22 years.

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

Sorry,
Meant to add onto the last post.

If anyone is from the South (United Kingdom) there is a fantasic nursery called "Architectural Plants" which is about 20 mins drive from Brighton. Worth going there just for a look around (plant prices vary from about £5.00 to about £5,000.00 - take cheque book!!!)

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

Just FYI...you can always edit any previous post (as many times as you want) by clicking the 'edit' button at the bottom.

And as for Ebay....they have some good listings. Some are overpriced, some are decent. I've never ordered any plants from ebay, though I did order some seeds recently. The one thing to watch is their shipping time. I've seen some that quote a month or more....and let's be honest...most of us bananaheads are WAY to anxious about these things to wait a month! :)

Sailfish 04-15-2009 01:47 PM

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

X2 for Ebay, you can even get Ae Ae seeds on there :lurk: (just kidding, I have seen some good deals on Ebay)

Might I suggest bananas.org (if you haven't already). I think it is a fantastic site.

If I recall I originally used Greenearth. Had no problems.

Now I am out of room. But when I do need a plant or have the opportunity for a new plant a nearby member has kept me well stocked. Which as always I am grateful.

Yeah, Going Bananas is a pretty good site. I've never ordered from them, but they have a great selection! I'm not sure where my bookmark for that site went...had it bookmarked at one time, but it wasn't now. Musta been before my hard drive crashed.

And I gotta say:

I haven't tried eBay yet for bananas, but I've bought many plumeria cuttings via them....all positive. Of course, if the vendor is in Thailand, you know it's going to take a while.

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

I think the biggest problem with eBay plants is that many of these operations have so many things going on and, perhaps, don't have good operating procedures to handle a wide variety of things and might be more likely to mislabel plants.

It took me 2 or 3 years to learn that the Dwarf Orinoco I bought from Wellspring on eBay were something else. It's a 10' plant that produced some good fruit for me last year even though it bloomed in late August and it's quite cold hardy, but it bugs me that it's an unknown. It might be a tall Namwah.

Chironex 04-17-2009 11:52 AM

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

Harvey, IF it is a tall Namwa, I would be elated! I have been looking for one of those. You know what I will say next, so I won't bother to ask. hehe
I bought 3 bananas from them last year. They were my first bananas. A Dwarf Namwah, Raja Puri and Truly Tiny. We will soon find out what I really have. So far, so good. I think I have baby pictures in my gallery.

I have bought a lot of plants from wellspring. I did receive the wrong passion vine and let them know, and it was replaced with the correct one. You can't go wrong ordering from them.

I got my order from Green Earth today. One was unmarked but could figure it out from the invoice.

All were good looking plants well wrapped for shipping, nice root balls.

Here are the baby pics.

(found the missing sticker in the packing paper)

I am happy with the order, fast shipping, and the look of the plants.

Let us know how the transaction goes Steven. My Banana budget is shot for this year, but I do want to increase my collection, and different companies have different types.

(I went with Green earth kinda blind, but they had the species I wanted I just hoped for the best.)

There is a nursery right next to me with good prices on bananas. I was going to go visit yesterday but there was very heavy rain all day. I think my rajapuri cost me like $12 or $15. Now I have 4 of them growing off that one purchase lol.

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

I am gonna have to relist my picks for best sites to go .....Green Earth AND Logees. Logees may be a bit more expensive but, I recieved the 2 naners I ordered and they both arrived very healthy and properly ID'ed. Plus, I bought my Musa "Double" mahoi from them roughly a week before they put that on sale, and the day they shipped it they sent me an email saying they read on "The Org" that I payed full price for it and that they are giving me a credit for the price difference. If that isn't wonderful customer service...I don't know what would be! Gota respect a company that actively seeks out and pays attention to what customers are saying/posting.

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

Yeah, LOL Sandy!

Here's a heads up....the Musa 'Mini' Super Dwarf Cavendish on Green Earth is most likely the 'high color mini' variant. It doesn't really say this in the description, but had someone on here ID it as that, so upon looking at the GE website again, I noticed the URL says /high-color-mini/ at the end....nothing in the description, and technically that's still an SDC, but more specifically, the high-color SDC. Just FYI.

And I just ordered an Ensete Ventricosum 'Maurelii' off Ebay recently from the seller 'EarthStar.' It looks very healthy and cost me ~$9 for the plant and just under $6 for shipping. Very reasonable, I thought. Here's a pic:

Re: what is the best website to buy a banana plant

I've had great luck with both 'Going Bananas' and a local Nursery that does mailorder 'Just Fruits & Exotics'. I've been a customer of 'Logee's' since the 70's but they tend to send small plants. 'Aloha Tropicals' has sent me mislabelled or has stated things about plants that aren't true(like self-pollinating when it requires another plant...). Hope that helps....which won't, if you're not in the US;>!
Cheers,
Pat

JD Andersen is a good source, though I have tried ordering from them several times and they did not have the plants in stock. They have a $200 minimum purchase, but occasionally they may have a special for a few weeks lowering it to $100 minimum.

Rarebananas.com is Jarred (Mediahound) our Administrator. So, you know that they are a good source!
