okay so its the end of april. last year i planted all the bananas on may 3rd. This year they told us late spring. I looked on the 14 day forcast and we are expecting 2 nights of 41. aside from that night temps will range from 45-52. I might want to put a tarp over the weaker plants but I am still putting them out. Thge last frost date or the day people go do the planting in southern Ont is May 24 but no way in hell am i waiting till then. so out they go !

Go for it. I'm in zone 5b and I planted all my stuff out this past weekend. Weird your last frost date is so late. Ours is April 26th here, but I'm 2 miles from Lake Michigan so that may help moderate things.

50s/40s in the forecast here too.

Okay they are out, planted mysore orinoco, kru and ensete. the others will be put out when it stops raining. either tomorrow or wed.

I think it is pretty much safe to bring everything out by now. I do however have on order a lot of wall-o-water covers which is supposed to protect plants from late freezes down to 16F so I'm looking forward to getting those, and then getting a frost just to see how well they actually work.

Water is supposed to be the best insulator so I think I can really put them to good use. This is really good for those of us in extremely cold climates because it lets us extend the season by a month on either side of our short growing season.

I live in WA state and this spring has been soooo wet. Most of my bananas are still indoors others outside in pots out of the constant rain though...they have just started to grow new leaves. I ordered a siam ruby and a black thai from Florida Hills and they are beautiful plants...very healthy. I also love bamboo and went a little bamboo crazy this spring by ordering 2 different kind of black bamboo one is the regular black the other a giant black Daikokuchiku and also a bory and a henon which are also supposed to be from the black bamboo. I also have a rhizome from a black bamboo planted indoors in a pot waiting for it to grow.

That sounds great except for the wet spring. I went to Vancouver Canada couple years ago and it rained a lot of the week we were there even in july. Bamboo is huge out there. Even here they said it was going to be a long cool spring and so far it has been. not the best but just gotta wait it out. To make up for this horrible wet slow spring we've had we sould get a long hot summer!!

Unfortunately in our area we don't really get hot in the summer. Breaking 90F is rare around here, but my bananas have already started to grow just a little bit so I think they should be fine.

In the PNW you can probably drive around and find a dozen species of bamboo since it is supposed to be bamboo heaven out there, and there are probably lots of bamboo growers that you can ask for to dig from. As a bamboo collector, I've been trading a lot in order to expand my collection which sits at 31 bamboos while I'll only have 4 banana species once my ensetes come in.
