As it was a nice Spring day the other day I thought I would uncover the top part of my Sikkimensis 'Red Tiger' to investigate how it fared over the winter. Plant is planted in the ground of a south facing part of my garden. (temps have been down to minus 3 on some nights).
Too my surprise there was new growth! about 6" of a new leaf growing on top of the 4' stem. Well chuffed! Then I thought I would check the root system by uncovering a thick blanket I had put down, and surprised to find two new pups still green and with new small leaves! The blanket has been down since last November, is this unusual as I thought no sunlight would mean no growth let alone green colour (yellow at the least!). I just wanted to protect the root system. I have now covered everything back as it was. It just goes to show how resilient these plants are! |

Congrats Carpy, it is not unusual that there is some new growth in a dark
winter shelter. Ron |

That's good to know, it got down to around -5c here so far this year but my plants have all been inside. I plan to leave a few out next year to see how it goes.
