Share your roadside banana photos

Two large mats very close together next to Flamingo road each mat has one bunch with a 10-12' p-stem. What variety do you think this is?

Sunfish if you mean Hawaiian apple it's very possible. The Manzano that I grow has a 7-8' p-stem and looks more like the first photo from Gabe15.

The photo you show from Jon's site is 'Mazano'. It's really hard to say what variety you ate unless you could show us a photo of the actual fruit you ate, preferably on the plant. The fruit bunches look very different, here are some photos.

Manzano type, 'Ungoye Sweet'

'Santa Catarina Prata'/'Dwarf Brazilian' ("Hawaiian Apple"), one of the most common varieties in Hawaii.

Well, since Sunfish put me on the spot...

My best guess is tall Brazilian (which is called Ladyfinger in Australia, or at least an extremely close relative is called that, and often called Ladyfinger in the US, Hawaiian Apple in Hawaii, etc.). The hands look too closely spaced to be Manzano. The bunch hanging at a 45 degree angle from the p-stem and then the rachis with a sharp downward bend are typical traits of Brazilian (but not exclusive to it). On the other hand, that would be one heck of a bunch for Brazilian, in terms of number of fingers and hands. So I'm not positive that it is Brazilian.

EZ, if your "Manzano" consistently fruits at 7-8', then it probably isn't Manzano, which typically fruits at 10'+. Hawaiian Apple (Brazilian) seldom fruits at less than 10'. That would be a typical height for Dwarf Brazilian (Prata Ana, Dwarf Hawaiian Apple). The fruit of Dwarf Brazilian and Manzano are easy to tell apart: thick peel for DB, thin peel for Manzano; and if Manzano is the least bit underripe (e.g., any green on the peel at all), it is essentially inedible because it is so astringent.

Thank you Mark I'm going to start a new thread with more detail on my plant and maybe I will be able to give it a positive ID.

No, Dwarf Brazilian does, but not tall Brazilian and other full sized, close relatives in the Pome subgroup.

I can attest to that I tried one after I picked some up @ Fiesta in Dallas and spit it out, but tonight I noticed one had a split peel.. Man it was fantastic.. :^)

Maybe it is Manzano, based on Keith's photos. Try some just before they're full yellow and see if they are edible or not and you'll know if it is Manzano.

It's an ABB variety, probably something in the Bluggoe subgroup, like Orinoco, but doesn't look exactly like that variety.

It's Mysore. The color on the underside of the unrolling leaf and the tightly-packed, cylindrical bunch with small fingers are the giveaways.

I'd still stick with that tentative ID, though I'd expect to see more retained grayish bracts on the rachis based on what I've seen before for balbisiana.

Very nice photos I_GROWER

In my opinion the first 4 images could be Blue Java but if the color of the fruit is the same as the last image then it's probably Namwah.

The Burros bunch appear to be the same as this picture I took a couple weeks ago image on the right.

The Monzano could be an off-type (somaclonal variation) of Namwah or something completely different.

The last image looks like Namwah the photo to right is a Namwah bunch.
