does any one have any good photos of red iholene or african rhino horn,as mine are very small right now so it would be nice to see what they look like,as a bigger plant.

great african rhino photo,rmplmnz its good to see different photos of these nanas,rather than the same photo used in every banana book,or every website selling them.

'Red Iholene' on the mainland is 'Iholena Lele' (pronounced ee-ho-leh-nah leh-leh), and the 'White Iholene' is a reduced color sport. Below are photos of mature 'Iholena Lele' in Hawaii (it is a Hawaiian cultivar).

There are a fair number of varied Iholena cultivars throughout the Pacific but a few are available on the mainland (Iholena Lele (red and white forms), Ha'a ha'a (I think may be a dwarf form of Lele and not the true Ha'a ha'a of old Hawaii), and Kumunamba which is a Iholena from Papua New Guinea).

African Rhino Horn
The Fruit is very immature. A storm blew over the raceme...they needed two more months on the plant...
Why do they refer to them as Rhino Horn?
I would speculate because of the soft terminal end of the flower…

Here's thed Red Iholena that I bought from Green Thumb Nursery the other day. It's in the back. It looks a little sad right now after being stuffed into a truck and transplanted.

There is a group of plantains called Horn Plantains which all only produce female flowers, never producing male flowers. This mutation has occurred a few times in other groups of bananas, but it is rare. There is a budless Saba-type I know for sure, and an East African Highland Banana which switches between "budded" and "non-budded" forms. There are also a number of varieties, both edible and wild, which quickly terminate the male bud, but that is a different action than not producing a male bud at all as in the Horn Plantains.
