Notice - Liquidation of Scot's (Chironiex) Banana Collection

THE AUCTION HAS ENDED - Thanks, everyone, for helping out our pal Scot!!!

With Jarred's consent, I'm posting this notice to the group to let everyone know that Scot is liquidating his entire banana collection in preparation for his move to China. Scot hopes to recoup enough funds so that he may fund his airfare and some other expenses related to the move to China where he will be involved in the noble profession of teaching children (teaching English, in this case). Scot hopes to get this taken care of promptly so that he may depart for China around July 22nd. Thus, time is of essence! Please help out to the best of your ability.

A few of us have already agreed to buy some of Scot's plants and get him started and I'm listing the rest of Scot's inventory with his approval. All purchases must be made by July 15th by 5pm Pacific.

Scot has listed his minimum selling price and this will be run sort of as an auction. If you wish to buy a particular plant outright (i.e., as if on eBay), Scot has agreed to sell it for double the listed minimum price. Edit: Once a plant has already had a bid, the Buy-It-Now price goes away and it goes to straight bidding.

Actual shipping charges will also be charged and all payments must be paid by PayPal. With such a short timeframe, Scot does not have time to wait for checks and money orders, etc.

Please e-mail Scot directly with your bids, questions, etc. at skashoon5472 (at) yahoo (dot) com (replacing where obvious with @ and .). Please be specific about what plant you are bidding on and your bid amount.

Listed below are the number of plants available, variety name, pups included with the plant, and the minimum price.

Bids are also listed below, though I might have made a mistake which can easily be corrected if you just bid more! ;) I discussed this with Scot and agreed to post the bidders name so they can tell if they are the top bidder or not. If you don't want your name listed, let Scot know (and PM me if Scot doesn't get the message to me or I overlook it)

I just got back from taking my son to the train station (night-time trip to boy scout summer camp) and Scot updated me with some bid info and I'll include that information as I get it (current bids are reflected in the original post).

Also, I'd like to point out that Scot is selling some Musa ingens seeds on eBay. These are some rare seeds and he's paid double his starting price for some of these so hurry and get them while they're available. You can find these the following two auctions.
Musa ingens seeds - Rarest of the Rare! 50 seeds - eBay (item 290330577345 end time Jul-13-09 21:35:53 PDT)
Musa ingens seeds - Rarest of the Rare! 50 seeds - eBay (item 290330577378 end time Jul-13-09 21:36:26 PDT)

Bid high and bid often! LOL

Scot, I truly hope you have a wonderful time in China and am sure you will be a great mentor for so many young lives. I wish you the best and trust you will touch base with us from time to time. Make sure you get your hands on some really cool nanners while you are there and let us know what we are missing... Take care and stay safe....

List has been updated about 5 or 6 times since I started it last night. I've also edited the instructions in hopes to make things run smoother so please read those again if you're thinking of bidding on something or even if you've already bid.

I was just thinking, if someone has some extra money laying around, I can start a "let's get rid of Scot" donation campaign! What do you think? :ha:

Thanks,

Harvey

Best wishes Scot.

I have always thought that one day I would end up in China for a time. I spent a couple years in South America, helping others, and had a blast. I am sure that you will find your time there very rewarding.

If I were not totally new to bananas, and had not already far exceeded my non-existent banana budget, I would pick up a few of those you are offering. I am only three hours from you here.

As it is, I can only offer you good luck and godspeed.

Scot-

I hope you have a great time in China... sounds very rewarding; it's rare the individual that actually does something great and noble. It's also great that you're sharing your fortune with the rest of us!

Cheers-

Thanks,

I am all for that! LOL

Thank you to all of you for your bids and more importantly for your well wishes. I ask only for your patience as I am a one man show trying to get all of these un-potted, packed and delivered to UPS/USPS/FedEx, etc. It will be a monstrous task. Compounding this, we are short-handed at work, so I will not have time during the day to do any of this work. Nights and early mornings will be spent to get these out to you.

Please be sure to send your shipping address to me on your Paypal instructions if you are the winning bidder. I will do my very best to keep shipping charges to the lowest amount. Please indicate your shipping preference as it is extremely hot here in Las Vegas. Although I will do my best to package your plants accordingly, the faster you get them, the better chance for survival of the plants.

Thank you once again for your help, understanding and patience.

Scot

Hi everyone, I just spoke with Harvey, who has been hard at work out in his orchard and alfalfa fields. He will be updating everything with the most recent bids after dinner. Thanks for your patience and numerous emails! Your outpouring of kindness is humbling and deeply appreciated. I hope to someday have the kids make a special thank you poster to all of my family here at B.Org We are deeply moved and forever in your debt for all of your help.
A special "Thank you" to Harvey for spearheading this effort for me. My mind is spinning with all of the things yet to do. Thank you also, in advance, to my good friend Paulie who will have the dubious task of helping me to pack and ship all of these bananas in 105+ degree heat!

Thank you Patty, I sometimes walk around the parking lot looking for dropped change, just to make this happen. lol Yes, I have lived in Wausau, Kronenwetter, Appleton and Scholfield, WI - but that was back when the glaciers were still covering half the state. hahaha

@Buzzwinder If I do get back to Rockford, I will definitely look you up! Casey's it is! I know that I will have to return for my daughter's wedding a year from now, so we will hook-up then for sure. I believe the date is July 17, 2010 so mark it down on your calendar. I will keep in touch through this wonderful site from time to time.

Re: Notice - Liquidation of Scot's (Chironiex) Banana Collection

Note: this is a shotgun auction and the rules are being made up as we go, but I'm doing just what I think is fair, etc. I have no stake in this so I'll try to be fair to everyone.

If someone already has a bid on a plant and someone else bids double the opening price, I'm going to put that down as a bid rather than "sold" under a Buy It Now deal since that's they way it works at eBay. If Scot wants it done differently, he'll let me know later and I'll change it.

I'll try to send an e-mail (or Scot will) if they are outbid, but I may miss this so please check back every so often.

I need to get with Scot to find out when the official ending time of the auction will be.

We already had two bids for the same plant for the same amount but, obviously, the one who sent the e-mail first gets that bid. This is a manual system so the auction status will get behind from time to time since I do have farm work also. It's presently only paying a little better than this job! LOL

Thanks,

Havey

I wanted to, but nah. :D Europe, remember.
SH3640 is the one that Greenie had so much fruit on, right? Some hundreds and incredibly heavy bunch of nanas. Ach. And I could dream on and on... :D
Ebun Musak is quite high to my climate though. I will have to wait for someone to liquidize in Europe... :D Not going to happen, I know...

I will be trying to establish a connection there to get some bananas for us. But it will not be for a few months until I can get established and travel there. Where do you live in China? It looks like I will be in the sub-tropical South eastern area, but that could change. Most likely, I will be in Hunan province for the first year. I plan to look into getting some connections set-up in Xishuangbanna and Northern Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. It will obviously take me some time to get there, but something I want to do next year.

Nice. Hunan is my homeplace, and I feel very glad that you can come Hunan, the Hunan province is beautiful. I have lived in Changde city of Hunan until 1999 for going to university in Wuhan city. After that, I study in Beijing and Guangzhou for master's degree, and now, I service a plant company in Nanning city of Guangxi province that is not far from Xishuangbanna. Nanning and Xishuangbanna belong to subtropical areas.

I really hope you can sell some high value seeds of banana to me, thank you.

Your chinese is good, hope we can keep contact each other.

Thanks Frank, yes the other plants had been sold previously. They were the first ones to go. They didn't even last until the posting.

If I get my hands on some 'Xishuangbannaensis' believe me, there will be some cause for celebration. As soon as I can, I plan to visit Dr Markgraf at Tian Zi to tour his operations and visit the tea house. Just sitting there sipping the worlds finest tea amid the jungle life will be quite exhilarating to be sure. No, I won't shave my head and sit in the lotus position all day seeking enlightenment. I do hope to learn more about and from the Dai people who inhabit the region. I wish that I could work with Dr Markgraf, but the job only pays room and board, no salary. (And there is no air conditioning. lots of bugs and other wild animals like Tigers, Elephants, Bears, huge snakes and of course Monkeys - probably the most frightening to me after tigers.)
Once I get more established, I will make some posts with photos.

Bob 07-14-2009 05:21 AM

Re: Notice - Liquidation of Scot's (Chironiex) Banana Collection

ok Scot, if you're going to be a wimp about it and not shave your head while sitting lotus position in a funny kimono looking thing, could you at least consider burning a tiger and dragon in to your forearms while carrying a burning hibachi with those embossed in the sides before running crying in to the snow. Developing the semi Asian sounding David Carradine voice that none of his family had would seem appropriate also.
Good luck buddy!

Re: Notice - Liquidation of Scot's (Chironiex) Banana Collection

As discussed in our previous correspondance, I also covet Musa itinerans var. xishuangbannensis. Please, please, please keep us in mind when you finally enter the Xishuangbanna province of spectacular plant material. Any banana, palm or ginger there simply fascinates me, and I'm sure our compadres. I currently have an import permit for Musa itinerans from China, so if I can be of assistance, please let me know.

I wish you the best of luck with your noble endeavour. I'm also very curious what your impression will be of Dr. Margraf. Based on my interactions online, I found him suspicious of my intent, easily frustrated and too distracted by other ventures to concern himself with helping an enthusiast. I also have major reservations about the competence of his staff. The original assistant was serviceable getting those first corms to me. Once she left, her replacement was useless.

Re: Notice - Liquidation of Scot's (Chironiex) Banana Collection

Scot is eating Chinese food in Las Vegas and I just finished eating Chinese food here in NorCal and I've got all the bids Scot has sent me updated. If you've made a bid via e-mail to Scot which you don't see above (unless you've been outbid, naturally), please send me a PM.

20 hours to go! :D

Today will be better than my work schedule yesterday....irrigating (and shoveling several yards of fill dirt into holes that appear in my alfalfa each irrigation in 100+ temps). Didn't have time for lunch yesterday and didn't finish until midnight, but I'll be in and out more today and will get any bids posted fairly quickly.

Once we roll around 5pm and you see me posting the final bids (I'll add "AUCTION ENDED" in the first post), please e-mail your shipping address to Scot so he can get you an accurate shipping cost and send you his PayPal address.

Thanks again for helping us send Scot to China! ;)

Harvey

So, which method of cooking them is best? LOL:ha::drum: If I can get them to develop a taste for raccoons and squirrels, I know where to get them - just call Patty!

If anyone is interested, I forgot that I have a nice sized (approx 14-16" tall - shippable size) Puya alpestris for sale, too - the one that will eventually produce teal-colored flowers. Here is a link to some pictures:
Flowers From A Bad Sci-Fi Flick - Fine Gardening

Reportedly cold-hardy, this is a really interesting plant. When it flowers, it will be the talk of the neighborhood. It takes several years to have one flower, so why not get one that is already established to cut down the waiting time?

$20.00 minimum bid (plus shipping) (I paid $19.95 for the plant last year)

I have one I would like to bid on but it wouldn't work out if its not here either before July 30 or after Aug 16. It would get stuck sitting at the front of the house in 100+ temperatures.

Scot , I wouldn't shy away from the cats. You're potentially going to see dogs as well hanging in markets depending where you go( I draw the line there even though one bit me in the eye last night, it was the size of a roll of charmin!) I've eaten mountain lion a few times(sweet and sour) it wasn't bad.

If I send it to you on Monday, you would have it before the end of the week. Besides that, it is sitting in 108 degree full sun right now. They love the heat and don't take much water. Just email me if you are interested in bidding or let Harvey know.

Thanks!

I suppose that it is something I would try, but hopefully I won't know it. It is very disheartening knowing the way these dogs are prepared for market. Atrocious may be a better word, sickening is probably the most descript term.

The auction here at bananas.org has ended.

If you're interested in giving at shot on germinating some rare seeds, Scot still has one batch on eBay: Musa ingens seeds - Rarest of the Rare! 50 seeds - eBay (item 290331300589 end time Jul-16-09 22:09:50 PDT)

Hey, everyone, Scot's without computer access at home (yes laptop was stolen a while back) and I know the buyers are wondering when to pay and when their plants will be shipped. Rather than have Scot e-mail each one of you via his cell phone, I'm passing on the word. He and Paulie are going to pack things up this weekend and will be getting payment requests out to everyone over the next few days.

Scot was able to buy his ticket to China today but it's a bit later in the month than he was planning so this gives a bit more time to get other things wrapped up as well.

I'll continue to provide Scot with sorted lists of auction results, etc. but the shipping information will all be coming from Scot.

Thanks,

Harvey
