Lynn,
Like I stated earlier, with the soil warming up lately, they have really grown wildly. They went through several weeks that I could have sworn to not move... Keep your pic and be ready to compare it to a new one taken in about a month or so and you will be amazed... |

I am in zone 6 onthe northeast Mass. coast. Both my basjoos came back. One came up from the center and the other threw out 7 pups from the "dead" mother. My suggestion is to get your basjoos from a northern grower. Some southern growers are calling their nanas basjoo, but they are not, and will not survive.

Nucci,
Just out of curiosity, exactly what do I have if not Basjoo. I would really like to know the difference between a northern and southern basjoo. Thanks for your input on this, as I always like to learn new things and I also want to know what I do have in case someone asks and I want to tell them what it is and not mislead anyone... |

The ones that I protected overwinter are starting to come up now. One is about a foot tall, after being about a foot tall before and being stepped on by a customer. The other is in a clump of very aggressive yellow groove bamboo that's about 10 feet tall and this basjoo is about 6" tall now. I'm going to have to hack off some bamboo around it to make space for it. One is just starting to sprout, but was in a bad location. One looks like a mouse made an all winter snack out of it and no signs of growth yet, but there was a very nice mouse nest when I uncovered it. Last one, still no signs of growth yet, but it's in partial shade and it's been soooooo cold here this spring.

Re: Musa Basjoos - How are everyone's doing?
randy, what Igot from two different sellers on Ebay,(both southern) were two bananas that were advertised as basjoo but were not.As they started to grow and I had gained some knowledge of Basjoo characteristics, I knew they were not basjoo.Neither returned the following spring though well protected. One had VERY slim leaves and the other had very broad leaves. Both sellers vowed they were basjoo. Igot two Basjoo from Sandy last year and both returned this spring.I have since recieved two more from her. I am sure there are ethical southern growers, but I got stung twice. I would rather get mine from (cold) Indiana.

I wish you the best, Nucci. There are shady sellers on Ebay from every parts of the U.S. Just don't want to discourage folks that want a basjoo and only think they can grow "Northern Basjoo" and not "Southern Basjoo". Basjoo, is basjoo, and the problem is the seller and not the particular area where the basjoo is grown. Sorry to hear about your bad luck with your past purchases on Ebay and hope your new ones grow to their full potential....
