The blue container is a half+ of a 55 gal drum for scale. Shown are possible sizes that will work.....but the bigger the better .... 45 gal preferred. A Viente in a container is a nice short managable plant. I have a Viente also and I hope this is the year I will get a bloom. ![]() My issue is once my growing season gets rolling.....it's over. ![]() Last edited by cincinnana : 03-03-2015 at 09:59 AM. |

To get something like good fruit, the bigger the better obviously! 15 gallon pot at the very least. However if your in zone 6 or better, i would consider a bigger and better pot for the winter and in the growing season to put her in the ground. Winter is for getting by, surviving. in the growing season you gotta get all you can
80 gal would be sweet!

Those buckets with rope handles work great as well if you take a drill bit to the bottom

I've got 15 feet to the ceiling in my greenhouse , so I'm going to throw caution to the wind and try to grow a Gros Michel ! It's little right now but I hope I can pull it off. They get very tall but I'm going to hope for the best.

Sorry I missed this post......
A container this big is NOT needed to flower a plant....https://www.flickr.com/photos/110357684@N02/15032407102 I believe if I had said an 80 gal container the previous poster would have said a 120 gal container would be better......not so.... |

Surface area seems to be the key factor, I use 8" depth with 45" by 60" sides. These were grown in 80 gal containers.

I have to admit I had no idea there was a dwarf Gros Michel ! I will definitely have to consider giving that a try. That's also interesting about the shallowness of your containers .

Awesome..... so you have a whole farm for bananas in containers... I did a look down from your IP and I think your fibbing.. Your place looks awesome.... Are you able to post pics of your plants in the containers.. from a distance so I may get a perspective of the size of your plants in the containers? Your plants are my benchmark (pipe dream) in the Ohio river valley. I was wondering how big a plant (as big as yours) can you put in a container that size. An 80 gal container is CRAY in my zone........except maybe for Daffodils. ![]() Last edited by cincinnana : 03-28-2015 at 07:44 PM. I think all bananas in plastic pots are doomed to transplanting ...
I wrote a bit about pot size here: Banana Cultivation In Non-Tropical Climates

When I'm using a container for a complete growing cycle I only use 80 gal containers to flower plants, because it flowers sooner and produces huge bunches. These 12.5ft³ containers are only in my experimental area.... not on my whole farm.

If you can't find a dwarf Gros Michel locally, I can add you to the list and send a message when I have extra pups.
