With the heavy rains last weekend (15' to be exact), two of the banana trees fell over that had a huge load of bananas on each one. I know I am not using the right terminology here, but yall get the picture. The leaves of the trees are turning yellow. The bananas are green and still slightly square....gosh they were so pretty. I don't know what kind I have, only that they produce good sweet bananas.
Can I cut the stalk of bananas off, maybe put a piece of PVC pipe over the end of the stalk, hang it like it normally hangs and feed it till they finish filling out? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Margaret |

You can attempt to prop it up w/ a board even as high as possible w/o breaking anything.. Dan did this recently. I don't have the thread link offhand, but I think you get the drift. Its all a matter of finishing.. Whether its time to cut would require a photo of the fruit in Q? I believe.. :^)

If the pseudostem is bent at a right angle, or just leaning badly, just prop it up as high as you can and wait. You may get enough growth to finish the crop. If the entire tree is blown over, maybe better. You can use a triangular prop like those used for supporting large newly planted trees. Stand it up, brace it, and mound good soil around the base. I have successfully done this after tropical storms and carried bunches to maturity. All of this assumes not very much damage to the pseudostem. See image in my gallery.
Good luck! |

The correct answer is to prop them BEFORE THEY FALL OVER !!!
this might sound like me rubbing salt in the wound maybe it is I also lost bunches this year to toppling and have learned my lesson for good Ok now that the scolding is over I have to go prop a couple bananas I've been neglecting LOL How many bananas must be lost before we end the insanity ? rofl
