Thanks guys...They are in pots but have great drainage...Should I cut those "black" parts off or leave it alone
I just LOVE my 4 Ensetes and don't wanna loose them. I'm in SW Washington by the way...I've had these for 3 years now and are wintered in my greenhouse that gets no lower than 40'...I got them as baby tissue cultures. |

For goodness sakes, have you ever considered giving the poor thing some room for its roots?
This pot is about 5 sizes too small. I transplanted a basjoo, which was smaller by PS diameter than your Ensete last fall from a nineteen inch pot into the ground for the winter and it was root bound. This thing is turning black for hunger.

Actually I transplanted them to this size last summer...There weren't as many roots in there as I thought there would be...I always see bananas and palms in such small pots...I will check them for root size tomorrow, but I'm not so sure they need replanted...Thanks for the thought tho

They are in a 16" pot right now, so I'll go find some bigger pots

If you want to trim off the black/dead parts, have at it! Mine get whittled way down when they're like that; I use an old long thin boning/fillet knife with the tip rounded off. I'd re-pot, as already suggested, but that call is dependent on what your final vision is for the plant. I've already had a 6 foot Blue Java jammed into an 8" diameter pot, there was nothing but corm in there but the height got "paused" at 6' - 8' tall instead of the 15+' it normally would have gotten to. (It started off as a pup & wouldn't otherwise fit in the greenhouse over the following winter). ![]()
