Recently moved from PA to Southern TX. I have flood irrigation access for my yard and all I know about it at this point is that I can turn it on and turn it off. When I turn it on to irrigate the yard I can obviously see the high and low points on the property and this has created a few questions for anyone who has flood irrigation and gardens or grows trees/plants with edible fruit.

1) Where should I plant my banana plants (several different varieties)? In an area that is high or low? I have the same question for my citrus trees (bought 9 different varieties to celebrate my retirement and the move). We don't get much rain here (at least not that I have seen yet) in Harlingen, TX.

2) Can I put a valve on the flood irrigation system (or have one put on the system) so I can have a more controlled irrigation system (used to garden in raised beds with drip irrigation)?

Usually you are only allowed flood irrigation on a schedule, here in AZ it would be a day every week or two, but yours might be different. This would very much impact your plans.

With the rivers and the large dam reservoirs at historic low levels, flood irrigation may be stopped soon in the mid west & western states.


Find out what the irrigation schedule and how much water you can take. .... This is a very inefficient way to irrigate. Your yard may be too wet for a few days and then very dry until the next scheduled flood. .... I would consider installing a large above ground pool (tank), then run sprinklers as needed to irrigate the plants without area flooding. Refill the pool on your scheduled flood days.

From where does your water district get its water and what is its projection of water use & supply for the next 10 & 50 years? This info should be publicly available.
