Id say thats actually 'Orinoco', not 'Dwarf Namwah' unfortunately.

Nicholas;
If you are ever in Jupiter feel free to stop by. All my DNW have produced 10 or more hands and are finger style bananas. Another thing I noticed is that honey bees love the flowers. Don't feel bad, I grew what I was told were Apple bananas and they turned out to be Orinoco's. I got the plant from a 'reliable" person, spent a lot of time and fertilizer and it was the wrong plant.

They came from Agristarts, so if they have given me the incorrect variety I will take it up with them. When I talked with Don Chafin at going bananas before I started my farm he said that dwarf Namwahs typically produced bunches in the 30lbs range which I would imagine is substantially less than a 10 hand bunch. We shall see in a few months.

In my experience, and my family has been growing Namwahs for a very long time, it never has any red spots. Never ever. That is characteristic of the Cavendish bananas and some others like Manzano at an early age. Dwarf Namwah should be nearly identical to Namwah except shorter which was why I bought it even though we have a ton of Namwahs here. I bought Dwarf Namwah from the same seller on eBay as Ron. And the first thing that bothered me was the red spots and I asked him for a replacement which grew all green leaves no red spots at all. So I have two different looking plants like Cheryl. Unfortunately, they haven't fruited yet, so I can't say what they really are. I can say that this seller has no misintentions and was nice about my concern over getting what I thought was the wrong variety. I also bought a Piper betel from him for my mom last year, that turned out to be Piper sarmentosum (which she thought was better lol). So I am thinking perhaps Agristart is screwing up and mislabeling some of their plants. The replacement Dwarf Namwah has yet to show any red spots on it yet. So do you guys think it could be Agristarts fault? Or something with the tissue culturing making only some of the pups mutate? Last edited by musaboru : 08-03-2010 at 02:53 AM. |

This is the latest bunch of D. Namwah this year.
Another thing to look at is the big broad leaves. I had to bend a leaf down to get a good photo. The bananas are bright green at this stage. ![]() ![]() ![]()

a guy can unknowingly buy a whole bunch of mixed up t.c.'s thinking he's gonna offer a good buying experience to his customers and turn a profit at the same time and he'll end up paying out big time... no one is gonna look at his supplier. just him im pretty much turned off by most big operations altogether.. too many bad experiences.. if there's ever a guy who does his own t.c. and he offers me a plant i wouldnt be so hasty. i think some of the big guys need to not put so much attention into production but quality control as well ...in the end everyone will be happy. |
