Deal......or no Deal?

First let me make a statement, "I just don't need another banana plant".

However, I just got back from my neighborhood Lowes and saw a whole bunch of gran nains.

All were marked 'Gran Nain' $24.99. The big ones had already gone through a winter and had signs of being cut back. They also has a few pups with each big plant. IMO these might be an ok value based on the size and girth of the plants.

The small ones seem like they are mis-ID'd as GN and that price is high. However there are a lot of plants per container.

The smaller ones are bordelon. I got one just like it here at Lowes too, along with zebrina and dwarf cav.

Can someone id the others as gran nain? I don't have it so I'm clueless.

I'm with guerich...If my Lowes was stocked like that I'd be in trouble.....I'd at least buy 2 big ones!

Not sure about the cold hardiness of them. It does get cold here.

Actually, often times I do as it is part of my job.
My wife gave me an iPhone gift card last Christmas. I finally got it last week, so I am playing around with it some now.

I'm with Matt on that!
For a great nanner that big & that great looking.... & with some pups.... You bet! Never hurts to have an extra nanner around & that's pretty cheap! Luv those red stems & I've discovered (many nanners ago), there's usually a way to beat the odds on survival

i say why buy a GN you can go to the store and get the fruit all day
If your like me your garden space is precious and needs careful design management i would pas on it

whats up with the Yellow leafs? that doesn't look good to me what do you all think?

Wow! Guess I'm a little too impulsive & Paul has a point. Those yellow leaves look pretty bad. Could be overwatered but, also, could be diseased.

My opinion is that you should find the ugliest one there, go to the register and ask for a discount on it.... they'll probably give you 50% off.... $12 for something that big isn't a bad deal at all. This is all because bananas are so tough they'll recover from almost anything.

Well... thanks to all the enablers offering their opinions.
I scoured the yard for a place to plant a Gran Nain. In the process I discovered a flag leaf for a Dwarf Namwah on a 15 month old plant. It was bitter sweet with the Fall coming on. Finally I found a clump of Bordelons, the smaller of the two that I have...right next to each other too.

A little work with the digging bar, the bunch came right up:

I remembered that I had a "spend $50 get $10 off card" in the house, grabbed it and headed to Lowes. I grabbed the biggest Gran Nain , some other crap to bring the bill to $50.15 before taxes, and got it back home in about 15 minutes.

I picked the biggest one. It was heavy and had a few broken leaves:

The plant was severly root bound and had to be at least a year old, maybe 2.

I finished off the hole planted it, watered it, and mulched it. Now I am the owner of a Gran Nain!

Not sure what ya'll see in the pics, but the Gran Nains were super healthy...a few broken leaves, but the color was excellent.

As far as asking for a discount, I had a discount card that essentially brought the price down to $15 before tax. If the plant make it, I'll consider it a deal. If not, then I'm out $15 bucks.
