Read the 'info: fertilizer' in the forum wiki' Note generally, container plants need less fertilizer (1/2 ???) than in-ground plants. Note also, banana plant less than 4 ft tall need 1/2 of the fertilizer that would be given to the same plant when 8ft to 12 ft tall; and again needs to be prorated per its height from 6" to 4 ft tall. Small 6" to 12" plant only need a tablespoon of fertilizer added to its pot.
Does this make sense? .... To many it doesn't. But if the container watered correct and not continually flooded, then fertilizer is not lost to drainage or competing plants (weeds???). |

I've been using Miracle Grow plant food on my container grown Musa Zebrina for years and I do the 1/2 as edwmax advised.

Half per package directions works well for young bananas. These directions are based on general needs for growing vegetable plants; not specifically bananas. .... But for larger nanas and you want fruit, the fertilizer application needs to be near full requirements of the plant for that growing season. ... Also, generally container bananas tend to be smaller and small bunches. .... I don't think there is any clear directions for container bananas, just what works for someone else. |

A lot has to do with what grow zone your are in and what size pot and size plant you are using.
If you are growing the plant for a tropical feel for the deck or poolside a water soluble like MG or similar will work just fine for the casual grower. Me, I use a water soluble for most containers and common granulars for other applications. I will use up to 30+ gallons per week for container plants ranging from 2 to 12 ft tall and in 1-24 gallon containers. I grow for foliage and the tropical effect banana plants lend to the landscape. If I get a flower I consider it a bonus ![]() In ground Basjoos and Mekong Giants get granular triple 19 at the moment with a 46-0-0 kicker. There are also a many good YouTube videos with some good informative takeaways on the fertilization of a banana plant. You will also find many folks have many different ways and styles of gardening....just find your groove. |

Great bargains can be had at the big box.
End of season markdowns on quality products. All types of fertilizers and insecticides and garden stuff you need. This is the time I stock up for next few years. Out of flatscreens so I went for the fertilizer.
