Lynn,

Your landscape is awesome! I'll have to show it to my wife. Is that the M. laterita I sent you in the pot?

It sure is Brent!!
And I have the other one in the ground. Here it is getting another roller!! :woohoonaner: They are both looking good and healthy! They're both starting to grow very fast! I wasnt sure how to plant them with their corms looking so different from anything I've seen, but I just used my "Mother wit" LOL
Oh Nate !!!!!!! there's the red castor bean from you!! Its beautiful ain't it!! Everyday it gets bigger and bigger!!
~Brent!~ you see the "mickey mouse" !!!!! It took it a while but its doing fine now! Gonna put it in the ground this week. Their tubers should do better in ground than in a pot I think. I love em! They are toooooo cute!!

Here's a pic of canna musafolia from Isaac. They are outstanding!! Isaac sent soooo many that I have them in the front and back yards!!! They give a great tropicalesque feel to my urban garden!!
To the right of the canna is a purple ornata from Chris in Florida! Its doing great!! It started off with the longest 1st leaf of all my bananas!!!

I got the camera now I have to learn how to take pictures to show the plants at their best angle! LOL
Fernieeeeeeeee! Here's a coupla pictures of your red cannas!!!!!

Those are in a fire pit somebody put out for garbage. hehehhehe! Looked like a pot to me! And this one is in a big tire I turned inside out (with help). And its blooming!!!!

If you notice, none of my canna and bananas have bug holes! Between the plants I have herbs, collards, and broccoli. The collards and broccoli ONLY have bug holes.
I sincerely want to thank all of YOU for your advice and plants!!!
Without you members I couldnt of done this!!!!!
Hope you enjoy the pictures and have a great day!!!

Lynn,

All of your stuff just looks awesome! Glad the little 'Mickey Mouse' bulbs finally got going for you. Mine is about 3' tall right now. You'll probably start getting little laterita pups popping up all over the place pretty soon from the one in the ground. It's a loose clumper so don't be surprised if some show up a foot away or so! You'll be cussing me before long!

Brent I'll be cussin' you in a good way then!!
Should my laterita flower like yours and Deb's I'll be ecstatic!!!!

Re: Bananas.org Members Yard Photos

I think you'll likely get a flower a little later in the summer. How tall is the laterita now?

The one I divided and repotted (and all the pups came from) is between 5'-6' now and it hasn't flowered again yet, other than the very first flower I showed back earlier. I'm sort of surprised but I think it's just growing like crazy (it has about 10 pups in the pot) with all the new room for the roots and rhizomes. I just sent Taylor a couple of pups off of it, in fact. I think as soon as it fills up it's root space a bit it'll start blooming pretty prolifically just like it did last year.

I've had a Musella blooming since March and a velutina blooming for a few weeks. Otherwise, I'm still awaiting bloom on M. coccinea, M. 'Thai Gold', and M. mannii. I'm pretty sure all of these ornamental varieties should bloom soon. Of course, I'd like my darn 'Orinoco' to bloom before Aug. as well but it's taking it's sweet time this year! I"m starting to suspect that my SDC may be getting ready to bloom. I'll keep you posted.

Dean, When I put them in the ground in April, I mixed milorganite in the soil, then gave them a heavy dose 2wks later. This is my 1st year for milorganite and all my plants are wayyyy bigger than they've ever been!!:woohoonaner:
Of course I fertilize the heck out of them with other fertilizers when the weather started heating up. When it gets reallll hot; I hold off on fertilizing all plants. ( Cuz Paul James said so )
Oh yea I gave them nitrate of soda also when planted in April.

Richard 07-23-2008 10:56 PM

Re: Bananas.org Members Yard Photos

Milorganite fertilizers are 5-2-0 or 6-2-0 depending on the product. The nitrogen is slow-release so that you don't have to fuss about burning the plants. Nitrate of Soda is 16-0-0. The nitrogen is completely water-soluble and readily absorbed by plants. I believe that the growth you are seeing is from the Sodium nitrate, aided by the miloganite product. Potash is missing from your nutrients -- try to identify a source that is Nitrogen free.

Sugar Apple is Annona squamosa, a relative of Cherimoya.

Thanks Chris, after decades of calculating and research it is more of a habit now. CRFG -- yes, I'm a member at large.

A farm supply store.

At the risk of being boring, I'll re-state that banana plant that is about a year away from fruiting (except the super-mini varieties) needs about 1.5 pounds of Potash in that year to produce a "commercial size" crop of fruit. :D

What you can make:
  • Corn-cob or Banana stalk ashes are 50% potassium by weight. You'll need 3 pounds of it per year.
  • Fireplace ash is about 5% Potash, unless it was green, unleached wood. You'll need about 1.5 lb / 5% = 30 lbs of it over the course of one year!
What you can buy:
  • Sul-Po-Mag is 22% Potash. You'll need 1.5 lbs / 0.22 ~= 6.8 lbs per year, which is actually a small amount. It is sold in 50 lb bags for about $20.
  • Grow More Inc. makes a water soluble 0-0-20. You'll need 1.5 lbs / 0.20 ~= 7.5 lbs per year. Depending on your source, a 25 lb bag sells for $25 to $50.

If you're going to buy the Grow More, you might as well buy the 20-5-30 water soluble instead and use it as your only fertilizer, excepting mulch, compost, and perhaps some kelp extract every other year.
