Just getting into bananas late this summer and now can't wat till spring. I have thinking if I should get small starter plants now snd grow as house plants so that I have a head start for next summer or just wait it out till spring to order my starter plants. Pros and cons are appreciated. Connecticut zone 6a

If you have a well lit room indoors, by all means start them now. it will give you
a head start for spring. If they are dependent on natural light they will grow very slowly during January and February*, but grow they will! *In my experience they still grow better in December, presumably, because it takes time before they slow down. Good Luck, Olaf

I've always gotten 4" starts from ebay really cheap so you can give em a try over winter and if they fail to thrive, get a few more in the spring.
Have fun, you're addicted now ![]() |

I ordered mine in late December last year and got them on January 2. I soaked the roots in starter solution prior to planting and got a really nice jump on the season. Additionally, I put them out a month early and covered them the two nights it dropped below freezing, with a light bulb inside. One of those two grew to 7+ feet this season and has put out tons of pups, all of which are now sword suckers.
