ensete or not ?
Interested to hear what people here make of this.
I am not convinced its an ensete at all, looks more like a Musa to me what do you think ?  |

Very interesting, Close up its not like my other basjoo's - i have approx 40 of them in various stages of growth. It appears more Sikki like to me, but not ensete as it is currently being sold.

My gigantea are too small for me to say for sure, but I would espect it to have red undersides to the leaves. The petioles on that plant have very large wings, my Beccari has very large wings on the petioles and a similar shape.

That reminds me of a trip to home depot about two weeks ago. They had Ensete labeled twice, once as ensete and the other as DC, what?
 It wasn't Home Depots fault it was the distributors, I told the guy when he was bringing them in it wasn't DC, he didn't want to listen. So I told Home Depot, I hope they changed it. |

i agree its frustrating when ya go to what u think as a reputable nursery
and they have plants mislabled.. i stopped buying tomato plants from one here in provo area.. because their staff always mislabel the tomato seedlings.. you dont know what you have until they set fruit then..its to late to start over.. sigh ive told them..they are gratious..and thank me..even offer another seedling ? start a tomato seedling in july.. LOL right... great pic musa monkey !!! |

Chini Champa is a possibility, its very close to that picture.
The thing is whatever they are, there in great condition so they clearly know how to look after them well. I like to encourage these small independant nurseries but would like to think they generally have a better understanding of the subject matter than the DIY sheds. I guess thats wishful thinking in some cases. |

Alan its definitely Basjoo.There are two versions that i know of is the B&Q one which is lime green colored one and then you get this one with darker leaves with red midrib.Chini champa has faint red small splashes on the leaves while small,and the p-stem is brown orange.

Hey, at least they try selling these bananas and yes, they look like they take good care of them. One of the biggest local nurseries out here is called The Garden Factory and they claim there is no such thing as a banana plant that will survive our zone (6a) and point out their ensetes and truly tinies. Someday, they WILL have a section marked "Zone Pushers"... I will not stop until they do! *insert evil cackle*

Looks like basjoo, they look quite different when they're grown in a heated greenhouse compared to outdoors or something.
Biggest clue is the pot- 'lifestyle plants', which only produces the common species en mass. Weirdly enough, I also received one identical to that labelled as 'rajapuri'. Andrew |
