We have had cold damage in Tavares, FL. I have 6 bounches of green bananas I'm trying to save. I've wrapped in towels. The leaves are dead but the fruit is still green and plump. Will they be any good this spring??
Last year I did the same thing and they had a hard steem in the middle but otherwise were good. Is this the result of the cold? Kitty |

Welcome Kitty!
How long has the fruit been on the plant? Do they look full? If the pseudo-stem is still green, and the fruit themselves have not been damaged by the frost, they may still be ripening. In addtion to wrapping the fruit bunch, if you are expecting frost in the near future, you might want to wrap the stem with some kind of protection, like bubble pack, up to the base of the fruit bunch. Also, place a plastic bag over the fruit bunch, with the bottom open, to keep the towels from getting soaked when it rains. |
