Don't be too hasty in removing those oaks. In the winter they create a warm zone (microclimate) that will keep the immediate area a few degrees warmer during Freezes. That will make a big difference in cold protection.

Oh yes, I didn't plan to. The lot is only close to half an acre if I encroach on the creek and neighbors' property. Luckily, my neighbor does not care because she would much rather have fruit trees and banana plants than weeds and raccoons. I only removed the dead trees and most of the underbrush so far.
Those trees are a BIG help for the storm winds and cold snaps. The wide-open areas get hit the worst, so I usually plant close to the creek, the house, and the perimeter for the big stuff. Smaller annuals go wherever =P
