Prune 6 to 8 inches above the graft union. Bury the whole thing in mulch, preferably a dry mixture of peat moss and wood chips. Put a small tarp or plastic over that so snow pack won't sit on directly on the mulch pile. Put some rocks or tree branches on the plastic to keep it in place. For Newfoundland, remove the tarp in early March and pull the mulch away from the graft union by April 1st (no kidding!).
