I don't recommend alternating dwarf and tall as the tall plants will shade out the dwarfs. I like my plants to get maximum sun. You might consider tall plants in the center with dwarfs on wings.

My plants are about 3' from the fence with 6' in between but I actively manage my patch (removing pups) with only one fruiting plant and one follower which will be the fruiting plant in the next season.
