Just about every summer, we have a heatwave which lasts 2- 3 weeks. Temps exceed 115° (typically a high of 117° or 118° with nighttime lows in the mid 90’s); so, perhaps that really is it’s issue.

Sounds like that might be your problem. That one day of 113 really did clearly damage part of the growing leaf -- so 2-3 weeks of 115-plus sounds like it could be a killer.
