Default Questions regarding AeAe banana

Hi all, I am picking up an AeAe banana this week. The seller also has a larger AeAe for sale from the same mother plant. He says this larger AeAe was variegated when it was smaller but has now lost it's variegation. What causes this? Can the variegation be brought back? I think I read somewhere that this can be caused by PH or fertilizer but I can't find the info. I was hoping some of you smarter folks know!
