Hi Sharon,
you mention heatwave. Do you live 'Down Under'? Anyway if that plant is in a pot
and the pot exposed to direct sunshine, you may well be cooking the corm. That
has happened to me even here in Canada. When I moved the pot into the shade
the plant recovered.
