If you were talking about edible bananas, I'd say yes, sometimes it is too late because huge pups that themselves are getting close to flowering may be so stressed by separation and loss of roots that they produce a stunted bunch of bananas. But with an ornamental variety, I wouldn't think you'd care about the size of the bunch produced.
