Wow!! It that a common practice to hack them off at the top like that? I'm new to 'nanners', and I've never seen that done. I bought 5 different ones (one was about 80lbs, and two were arond 50-60lb), and none were ever subjected to that - nor would I have ever thought to do that to them. Seems kinda harsh. My three largest ones never dropped any leaves from the transplanting process, so I don't think they ever had any stress from it. The lopping off of the top would surely have stressed them out quite considerably.
