In case you missed it in my response, lady finger and mysore are known to be drought tolerant varieties.

for ornamental purposes I would suggest looking into Ensete (http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=3387965), a very close relative of musa. There is a cultivar of ensete grown in the Sahara...
