Re: Survived the freezes, but now are dead??

Here in the UK we grow different types of bananas - more hardy types, but even they have suffered this year. I have noticed that some of my M Itinerans, instead of re-starting their main pseudostems...

Re: Non typical ensete ventricosum maurelii

What I was thinking is perhaps the moulds/bacteria which rot them are not active at UK winter temperatures?

Non typical ensete ventricosum maurelii

Hi,

A while ago I posted regarding being forced to try overwintering my ensete ventricosum maurelii outdoors in the UK this year.

I was surprised to learn that it was supposed to be sensitive to...

Re: Cardamons - how hardy are they

I could be. It does seem to thrive in shade, but will tolerate sun too, and drought.

Re: need help on ensete maurelii

I doubt slugs will touch your banana. Banana plants do get tatty in winter and grow more straggly with lower light levels of winter. I dont think there is anything wrong with your plant other than...

Re: need help on ensete maurelii

I think too low humidity and too high expectations during winter. Get through winter and plant it out and it will thrive.

Re: need help on ensete maurelii

Looks like the leaves are drying out to me. Too low humidity. Would like a bigger pot too - they have BIG! roots.

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

Bilbergia Nutans flower just about anywhere they don't get eaten by slugs. You can grow a lawn out of them! They flower in shade or in full sun.

As for the M Basjoo, they can often get squishy...

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

What you can grow in Wiltshire will probably depend how close to the sea you are. On the very coldest Devon nights there can be 10 degree C difference between the coastal temprature and the inland...

Re: Heating cables

I don't have any real problem with soil temperature as a good mulch is sufficient in coastal Devon, but I was thinking of next year protecting p-stems with heating cables so they don't lose height...

Re: Heating cables

We can buy heating cables which you can twine around outdoor plants with a thermostst which turns them on at 5 degrees C.

Re: Orinoco Banana rated for zone 7

I have overwintered them in an unheated greenhouse and they were very tough - kept leaves all winter, but havent tried them outdoors yet.

Cardamons - how hardy are they

Hi,

I bought a plant named as Amomum cardamomum from a dodgy DIY shop garden centre.

It looks like a ginger, but the recent unexpected frost of -9 degrees C has killed all the leaves and stems of...

Heating cables

Too late for this year, but if we are going to get colder winters again, I was thinking of protecting my M Itinerans with heating cables next year. I have lost all the leaves this year, though the...

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

Hi dablo93
So are you in Holland?

My PC will not display the maps from the forum since I swapped to vista.

How do you keep an ensete indoors! Isn't it too big?

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

You make me feel much better that someone else lives somewhere where hardiness zones just don't really predict what you can or can't grow. I am not alone then!:woohoonaner:

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

Hi Remko,

The gravel bags aren't big enough here in the UK, as I need one about 9ft high, but I will order a bag big enough from the garden shop made of 70 g/sq m garden fleece.

Re:-"I'm sure I...

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

Well, if we all think wet is the main problem, has anyone tried these fleece bags like on:-

Obviously after the frost has zapped the leaves or it would not...

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

Well, my plant is about 8 years old, but this is by far the coldest winter we have had so far in it's lifetime - not the wettest though! In fact by SW UK monsoon rain standards it is a dry year!...

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

Mine doesn't get marks on it's leaves until about -3 degrees C, but -9 degrees C kills it's leaves completely, even the midribs. -6 C kills leaves but not the midribs. It has been very wet all summer...

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

My figs never ripen. Eventually they just rot, but are not at all soft.

Perhaps I am growing the wrong variety?

Re: Anyone growing Ensete outside in the UK?

Re:- Is that the same as ENSETE VENTRICOSUM abyssinian banana?

Yes, but it is a red variant.

It may be colder in many UK areas, but here in coastal Devon they don't. Mine is definitely not at all...

Preventing flowering of Musa Velutina

Does anyone know how to deter Musa Velutina from flowering if brought indoors. This variety does not survive outdoors in the UK, but when brought indoors almost always flowers immediately (2 to 3...
