Re: Dwarf Orinoco fruiting in Raleigh, NC

I saw that method being used on several types of bananas at the fairgrounds in Raleigh, N.C. many decades ago. I may be mistaken but I think it was Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery, just outside...

Re: Experimenting with creating filtered coarse sand for corms

For myself it would be, because even if others recognize some negative trait such as maybe large variegated patches that may burn in the sun, I have enough space to plant it and see what babies it...

Re: Speed

Do you also end up with some charcoal in that final burn? I have been wanting to try making charcoal as it can do wonders for soil. I did not realize that the ash would hold moisture like that.

Re: Musa Nono

Mine grows well and seems tough as it was inside all winter and had a spider mite infestation that did not seem to bother it. Pups well too. It came from a smaller island off Papua New Guinea and was...

Re: What's the best propagation method for this situation?

" the buds in the upper leaf scars are not going to be dominant"

Great info for propagating! What are your methods for making the main growing point go dormant?

Re: What's the best propagation method for this situation?

Well you do not mention any other offshoots so I think leaving the new shoot still attached to it's VDN mother, but cutting it's trunk off after it has attained enough size and destroying its growing...

Re: I harvested some nicely variegated water suckers

Sounds like natural "vertical propagation" by the plants "raising" their growing point. Does not explain the increased girth though.

Re: Variegated Namwa

It has exceeded my expectations. It holds 9 leaves now, puts out a new leaf every 2 weeks, and does not skip a beat. All my other bananas just keep a leaf or two or even none over winter. Will try to...

Re: Variegated Namwa

Do you think the seeds did not get good pollination, were not mature, or something else?

Re: Variegated Banana Seeds

Will definitely use this method on my next batch of seed. Even though I had good success with my banana seed before, I had even better success after several days of rain that did not let the surface...

Re: Two water suckers growing closely together - what next?

I agree. You should wait until they are bigger. Seems you have plenty of fertilizer laying on top of the soil so I would not add more. Just do not over water, give them as much full sun as you can or...

Hope you find more seeds but not by potentially cracking a tooth. Must be nice living in the tropics.

Re: Variegated Namwa

That makes sense to me. To clarify, if I am reading this right, the variegation and the dwarfism was deep down inside the probable original tall all along as a recessive gene. I'm guessing dwarfism...

Re: Variegated Namwa

Interesting that the dwarf and tall would vary that much in variegation color. I would have thought that the two would have originated from a single Namwa parent plant ay some point. Does this mean...

Re: Speed

Thanks for sharing that info. I have used a mix of grass clippings and straw but not with a manure slurry. I will try it. When the circus used to come through here every spring I would drop off a...

Re: Attack of the wild Puerto Rico Banana seedlings!

Thanks for the tip on the twisted leaved sprouts. Of the two I got they do just seem to resist any efforts to get them to grow like the other sprouts. I have even tried a very mild nutrient spray to...

Re: Attack of the wild Puerto Rico Banana seedlings!

Yes the variegated ones are much weaker than the green ones. Some of my variegated have twisted leaves. Some of my green sprouts are already showing a stripe or so of variegation. The mature green...

Re: Variegated Dwarf

Broke my camera lens on my phone last week. Have needed to replace this phone for a while now anyway but am in my busy season of work so have not stopped yet.
I can see the promise in that pup.
