Re: Best bananas to dig each winter in the north
I'm with you! My red banana is probably 12' at this point and looking perfect! Here in Denver, the first frost (which can actually be a wet snow), can be anywhere from the first week of October to...

Re: Best bananas to dig each winter in the north
I have a red leaf Abysinnian that's on its 2nd year here in Denver. Right now, I'd say it's about 10' tall. They're beautiful and the leaves are huge!
Just before first freeze in October, I chopped...

Re: Musa basjoo never makes it
I haven't taken any pictures yet. I figured I'd let it grow for a while and show something no one would ever expect to see in Denver!
I've learned that the whole neighborhood loves my crazy banana...

Re: Musa basjoo never makes it
I'm wondering if it will flower this year. I had one in SoCal that grew huge for 2 or 3 years and then it put out a huge (like the size of my head!) black flower! And then it died, which is what I...

Re: Musa basjoo never makes it
Here in Denver, I'm at zone 6a, and have had little success with the basjoos. I could only get them to come back from the ground, and then had very little growth (maybe up to 3' over the...

Re: When to winterize Basjoo bananas
Probably so. I had one in California that got huge, then put out a giant black flower, and then the main flowering plant died. I keep having to cut the leaf back it's trying to grow in my greenhouse...

Re: When to winterize Basjoo bananas
I'm in Denver and have tried Basjoos in the past. I got one to come back from the ground after one winter, but it never got more than a couple feet high. I also tried bringing the stalk in to...

Re: Spring is here finally
I think part of why I love growing bananas is because I'm so impatient. They grow fast and a new leave is always popping up!

Re: Spring is here finally
That's too bad!
I couldn't find any basjoo at the nursery where I've bought them before. I ended up getting a red banana, which isn't cold hardy at all to my knowledge. But it was only $39 for one...

Re: Spring is here finally
Very nice! I'll be starting with a new basjoo... probably planting in a week. I have one small one that was indoors all winter, so that one will go back out too.
We're in the 80s most of this week,...

Re: Spring?
It's supposed to be 80 here in Denver today, but April (and early May) can be cruel! Crazy temp fluctuations this time of year. I don't consider planing bananas until May 15, and even then I double...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived
I'm putting mine back in the ground after work today. We actually had a very light frost yesterday morning! Today is sunny and 80, but then 3 days of 60s and rain coming up. Spring/Winter just...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived
Yeah, water them. They'll grow new leaves soon.
I'll put mine back out tomorrow. I had snow at my house, but it never stuck or got below 32 degrees. They said that was the latest snow we've had in...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived
My Basjoo stayed green/alive in the ground well into November the past couple years.
Right now, it looks crazy outside. Huge flakes of snow coming down! But it's 35 degrees. I guess it's the...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived
OK. I have a nursery in Denver that sells Basjoos every year of decent height, so never bought online.
Everything is out of the ground now and in the garage. I hauled in potted plants too, and will...

Re: New Musa Basjoo Plant Arrived
Mine is about the same size as your larger one in the picture. I know this happened a few years ago and since I have just planted it, it'll come back out easily. That's what I did before... just...
