Re: first year basjoo, what to expect?
Well that's very reassuring, Longwoods. Glad to see someone so close who is growing bananas with success! I'm hoping for a whole year full of them one day. :) yours look great, btw. 8 feet tall...

Re: first year basjoo, what to expect?
Wonderful! I could use some screening around my patio. Unfortunately, only one side of the patio is sun due to a very large maple on the other side. If things go well in the tropical garden, the...

Re: first year basjoo, what to expect?
Siege, you think I will have pups this year? I'm hoping so! :)
This spring was rather cool. We're finally seeing more 80 degree days. We don't usually see 100 temps here, but it has happened. ...

Re: first year basjoo, what to expect?
Well, that's good news. I think I'm overly excited about the bananas. I check them constantly for new leaves. I'm hoping for some good summer heat to get them cranking!

first year basjoo, what to expect?
I bought a musa basjoo this spring from a catalog. It was very small when it arrived. I believe it was what everyone refers to as a tissue culture. It's healthy and growing albeit very slowly. ...

Re: Potting soil advice (newbie)
Lunepeace, I try to substitute coir for peat moss when I can. I believe that it's much more eco-friendly. It tends to be more pricey, but that could just be my location. I usually have to get it...

Re: huge ensete bananas in zone 4
The man in the link says the 4 foot stump weighs several hundred pounds! Oh man, I just bought a little one a week ago. I'm keeping it in a pot this year. I'll probably put in the ground next year...

Re: hoping this is a dwarf variety
Pancrazio, yeah that's what I thought too. It wouldn't be the first time that a nursery tag was wrong. I have one in the sun and the other morning sun for now as it has some droopy leaves after the...

Re: tree philodendron
Thanks so much for taking the time! I couldn't find anything on Google about it, so I appreciate it! Good thing there's no shortage on elephant ear varieties to fit the bill!

Re: hoping this is a dwarf variety
Where I live, it's gonna take a while for fruit.... I knew that going in though. I bought a second plant from the same place and it's going through a bit of shock now. The leaves are rather droopy,...

tree philodendron
I was wondering if the tree philodendron (Philodendron bipinnatifidum) grows from a bulb or corm like an elephant ear? And can it be stored dormant for winter? I know I can grow it as a houseplant, ...

Re: hoping this is a dwarf variety
I can see that. I never do anything halfway. I can see many more plants in my future as well. I might have to give away some of my old indoor plants to make room this fall!

I hope you're both right. I suppose a greenhouse here in Michigan would most likely sell a dwarf cavendish, but they did have some large ornamental bananas too. I'm really hoping for fruit, so...
