Re: Simplest avocado germination?

I start them in moist moss ziplock bags with a little bottom heat. That's how I start avocado and other seeds in winter.

You may get a little lanky growth, sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

Re: Is This Guanabana Tree Dead ?

Heat will probably trigger the releafing at least it did for me. I just grew them in pots though far outside the zone you should . . .

Re: Naranjilla (Solanum quitoense)

Oh, wow they get even bigger. . .

Maybe my first three are just duds. I have a fourth plant I picked up from a different source that has an abundance of fruit on it at the moment.

Those tomato...

Re: Naranjilla (Solanum quitoense)

Just curious, but what sized pots? What really triggered mine to start blooming was an upgrade to a larger size. I think it was 5 gallons, but let me check. Now I put them straight into that size...

Re: Naranjilla (Solanum quitoense)

I am also in the SF Bay Area and while I have heard of someone very close to me with the spider mite issue. Mine seem to be problem free for now minus the massive water requirement. I am actually...

Re: Mangosteen

I have to move mine inside. They are in pots. I am in Zone 9, but even a NorCal Zone 10 is too cold for them. They start to decline, etc. They seem to be doing well as pot specimens though.

Re: Sapodilla in CA

Makak is another one that supposedly will fruit in a container. I would probably try that or Silas Woods.

Basically mine have been extremely slow growers just sitting there for a year, adding 2...

Sapodilla in CA

So I have a couple seedlings. They live and grow, but very slowly. They do live though. I recently found out about two possible varieties that can be grown and fruited in pots. Anyone grow this...

Re: Mangosteen

I heard legend that a sadly tree did live for a while in Orange County where Jackfruit, Mammey Sapote, Sugar Apple, etc. are possible. Probably one for the heated greenhouse though.

Re: Mangosteen

I'd still grow a Mangosteen if I could in CA. I have little pitiful Gambage seedlings. Kind of a relative. . .

I'm just jealous you got fresh Mangosteens . . . . :ha:

Re: Mangosteen

Don't get me wrong. I do like Mangosteen. I've only had imported ones, BUT . . .

I think some of the hype with the mangosteen is the rarity/scaricity.

I personally thought as far as quality...

Re: Pawpaw Power!

So I have never actually had a Persimmon graft take while the tree was dormant. (At least ones I've done, but I often use inferior knifes, etc.) Well the one case I did get take the tree sent out...

Re: Pawpaw Power!

Oh, also remember there's no reason you can't have one tree and just graft a pollinator branch or a few varieties on. Just don't do it in winter like stone fruit/pome fruit. Wait until the...

Re: Pawpaw Power!

Clumps of Paw Paws can be the same tree genetically because they send up suckers.

A lot of them do need cross pollination if I remember. You might want to do the Cherimoya trick and try some...

Re: How long are banana seeds typically viable for?

Thanks. I know not to expect 100% germination, it's just with some things if you know it's been sitting around for a year there's no point.

Re: Pawpaw Power!

They grow in the SF Bay Area and Central Valley of CA if you provide shade when they are young. There's also one that tastes like Cherimoya I've heard.

I bet there are localities in Southern...

How long are banana seeds typically viable for?

I'm wondering how long are banana seeds viable for?

Thinking about ordering some online. I typically have had good luck with some groups of plants (like stuff in the guava family or Annonas) and...

Re: Naranjilla (Solanum quitoense)

Mine are completely thornless. I haven't seen a plant with thorns except in pictures. If they are anything like the thorns on a Litchi Tomato then I am glad. I opened my last two fruit from last...

Re: New varieties from me, Pics! Interesting!!?

Have you tried adding and of the Mexican Elderberry to the mix? I know it's climate is different, but the farther south you go along the west coast the more edible they seem to get at least to me.

Re: Harvey & Son Michael's 2012 Tomato Garden

Yes, I think I read the same comments somewhere about flavor. Still I got curious. Besides that I'm just doing SunGold which does very well for me, Green Grape, and Mt. Vesuvius. Honestly, there...

Re: 1st time canna growing ( is this right?)

Even if it doesn't straighten up completely the next shoot would be straight.
