Maybe not enough sun or soil conditions are off for some strange reason.

Something is certainly off...

I purchased one last year from PDN. They are about 12-13 feet tall as of today and doing...

I did a bit of that this winter, along with a few bags of mulch.

All my plants are starting to wake up - Feb. 3rd!

I didn't cut the stems all the way to the ground, left about 4-5 inches and...

They certainly can go into shock when transplanted. I have had some just about loose all their leave and come back and other loose and die.

Did you allow any of the roots to dry before...

Also, one good thing about this type of plant is that you really can't over water it during the growing season.
