Re: Sold as "ice cream": pink pseudostem, maroon leaf midribs, glaucous leaf undersid

Blue Java is mostly green with a waxy sheen but can have some pink on the p-stem under normal circumstances. But often this much pink coloration is indicative of issues with nitrogen and/or...

Re: Should I cut off banana rack now that it's getting colder?

I'm in zone 10a as well. I have a Blue Java that has just thrown out a flower bud myself, and I am choosing to keep mine.

You may still get a harvest as long as there are plenty of green leaves on...

Re: JADAM ultra low-cost organic agriculture

I would say that if the dried material has been left out to oxidize in the sun, it likely has much lower nitrogen content. Otherwise, I can't imagine how it would be that different.

Re: Did I overfertilize?

This definitely looks like overfertilizing to me. I would say that your bananas already have access to plenty of nutrients for now since you amended with mushroom compost and horse manure. It's...

Re: Using bananas as a garbage disposal = super happy bananas

Amazing! Totally agree! Those are some really happy looking Namwahs.

Yeah I imagine too much citrus would be an issue. I've added citrus a little bit at a time to worm bins/compost piles and it's...

Re: Using bananas as a garbage disposal = super happy bananas

Nice! I highly recommend trying JADAM - the preparations are a lot easier and
simpler. He made a video on the JADAM microorganism solution (JMS) that's worth checking out.

Re: Using bananas as a garbage disposal = super happy bananas

Thanks! Yes that's exactly what it is! I use whatever compostables I have on hand that would work in a cold compost bin or a worm farm. This is at a school garden I maintain for work so I don't...

Re: Will bananas fruit growing in grass?

Yes - T. Diversifolia is an evergreen perennial. It is usually propagated from woody stem cuttings. They root easily. Like bananas, they retain their leaves and slow their growth in the winter,...

Re: Will bananas fruit growing in grass?

Definitely keep cutting the grass and use the clippings to mulch the bananas. It also sounds like your bananas can use some companion plants that will shade out the grass around them. Tithonia...

This is a 15-month-old Blue Java mat grown from a 1.5 ft tall water sucker, and she has to be the happiest banana I have ever grown. I've been using her as a garden/yard waste dump by building a...

Re: Watering advice for a newb?

I like to build a berm around my plants like you would for a fruit tree and water until the soil is moist (not wet). Let it soak in, but make sure your soil drains well. Depending on your local...

Re: Cutting back question

In your zone I would probably pot/dig it up. Cut it to at least a foot above the corm if you are storing it bare root. In-ground edible varieties are killed if the ground freezes. I have heard of...
