Re: Red banana plant ID

Is that a variety that would bear edible bananas in a tropical climate? And how would I propagate it?

Red banana plant ID

This red, short, thick banana plant was given to me last fall. It spent the winter in a greenhouse and I put it in the ground in May. The person who gave it to me said he hadn't seen it have pups....

Re: Finally got a taller basjoo

Aside from feeding and watering, I've found mine get taller in a season when they have a developed root system (second year or more in the ground) and the stem isn't killed down to the ground or...

Re: Musa Basjoo slow growth in Missouri

It's been growing roots. Transplanting a big plant in July in Missouri is quite a feat. It's a wonder the thing is alive. I think the roots have been getting established. Once the roots are...

Re: basjoo out the wazoo to many pups to save

I sold basjoo pups last spring for $10. I just put an ad on Craigslist and a local Facebook yard sale page. I dug them up when people showed up and put them in plastic grocery bags. I sold a couple...

Re: Mekong Giant vs Basjoo

Cincinnana, is that fern winter hardy? By that, I mean does it come back every year after being left in the ground in your zone? And does it require more shade than sun as you described above?

Re: Super Dwarf Nam Wa Updates

Having thought about it, I'm thinking there might be 2 different views of "cold hardy." If a person expects the banana plant to stand year round with green leaves 12 months, then even a basjoo like I...

Re: Super Dwarf Nam Wa Updates

For any other people reading this forum on cold hardy bananas, the response was that they are not cold hardy below zone 11.

Re: Super Dwarf Nam Wa Updates

Are they winter hardy enough to leave them in the ground in zone 7?

Re: Glyphosate and bananas

Glyphosate will only kill plants when it gets on the foliage. If the foliage of your weed can be leaned away from the banana leaves and you use a coarse spray, you can kill the weed. Glyphosate will...

Re: Masa Basjoo Banana

Plant them deep enough that the entire corm won't freeze next winter. From your description of beautiful plants, they're apparently leafed out. So keep them potted and indoors or move in and out as...

Re: miracal grow...missed that one

To keep from burning, as the plant (and root area) gets bigger, move the area that you fertilize farther from the stem or trunk. Make the roots go out to get it.

I've had some musa basjoo plants for 3 years and this past winter was my first attempt to preserve some of the stem over the winter. I started the spring with about 3 feet more or less of stem on...
