Re: History of banana cultivation

translation to English for above post by CESARAURELE;

"It seems, according to Pliny, that Alexander brought banana trees back to the Greeks, which were therefore known to the Romans."

Re: My New Favorite Banana Plant

Wow! Seeing the whole plant with rhizome really shows it's dwarf nature. Hope your horse doesn't see that as a tasty treat.

Re: trying to figure out the right amount of wood chips for musa basjoo over winter

I got tired just looking at the amount of work you put into that. LOL. Oh, also I think you got the right amount.

Re: Musa Nono

About 3 weeks ago I decided to move my potted Musa Nono from it's all summer outdoor full sun spot to my greenhouse as we were forecast to get one freakish night into the lower 30's F. It had already...

Re: Propagating a Variegated Florida - photos only

Great information! That's probably exactly the reason I lost AeAe a few times in the past.

Re: Strange Pup Formation

The top picture is the most beautiful but I find them all beautiful. Do you think it will continue with that pattern, on both leaf halves, on most leaves? Will most of it's offsets tend towards that...

Re: Musa Nono

Even though I did not baby my Nono this summer it still grew well and has many pups. I did drop it into a larger pot this spring with a very well drained airy mix similar to that recommended by...

Re: Strange Pup Formation

Well, pupping like that must be island magic, good genetics, and grower know how. Never had that happen for me before even though I have had tons of pups, of several varieties, over the years.
Yes...

Re: Feral Golden Tiger Rescue?

I would absolutely rescue it! Must be nice to find that just growing on it's own.

Re: Clean Coarse Sand - Horticultural Sand

What kind of screening are you using? Not only does my area not have suitable pre-screened coarse sand I have not found any screens except typical window screens for insects and then screens jump up...

Re: Dwarf Orinoco fruiting in Raleigh, NC

I saw that method being used on several types of bananas at the fairgrounds in Raleigh, N.C. many decades ago. I may be mistaken but I think it was Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery, just outside...

Re: Experimenting with creating filtered coarse sand for corms

For myself it would be, because even if others recognize some negative trait such as maybe large variegated patches that may burn in the sun, I have enough space to plant it and see what babies it...

Re: Speed

Do you also end up with some charcoal in that final burn? I have been wanting to try making charcoal as it can do wonders for soil. I did not realize that the ash would hold moisture like that.

Re: Musa Nono

Mine grows well and seems tough as it was inside all winter and had a spider mite infestation that did not seem to bother it. Pups well too. It came from a smaller island off Papua New Guinea and was...

Re: What's the best propagation method for this situation?

" the buds in the upper leaf scars are not going to be dominant"

Great info for propagating! What are your methods for making the main growing point go dormant?

Re: What's the best propagation method for this situation?

Well you do not mention any other offshoots so I think leaving the new shoot still attached to it's VDN mother, but cutting it's trunk off after it has attained enough size and destroying its growing...

Re: I harvested some nicely variegated water suckers

Sounds like natural "vertical propagation" by the plants "raising" their growing point. Does not explain the increased girth though.

Re: Variegated Namwa

It has exceeded my expectations. It holds 9 leaves now, puts out a new leaf every 2 weeks, and does not skip a beat. All my other bananas just keep a leaf or two or even none over winter. Will try to...

Do you think the seeds did not get good pollination, were not mature, or something else?

Re: Two water suckers growing closely together - what next?

I agree. You should wait until they are bigger. Seems you have plenty of fertilizer laying on top of the soil so I would not add more. Just do not over water, give them as much full sun as you can or...

Re: Variegated Namwa

Hope you find more seeds but not by potentially cracking a tooth. Must be nice living in the tropics.
