Re: Virupakshi/Indian Hill Banana

Awesome! Thanks for the write up! Is this one the clone I imported? I can’t remember if I sent you one.

The ones I’ve eaten have been amazing! More Pome tasting only sweeter. How would you compare...

Re: Dwarf Cavendish fruit with a “core”

Not Musa cavendish.

These look to be Musa dwarf Orinoco. With a picture of more mature fruit I could confirm. Very cold hardy dual purpose banana and known to have a core. I get a core in maybe 1/4...

Re: Developing new variegated banana varieties

I can also confirm this method works. Low light and speeding growth is another easy method.

Re: Mystery Musa! Gabe?

I was watching mine closely but sadly lost it this past winter. We had the coldest winter in history here in TX add 2 weeks with no power and I lost a few varieties.

I was reading my notes and I...

Re: Looks like I may not receive my order from Florida Hill Nursery.

Some people just like a surprise 2 years later I think. As a collector I just don’t get it? Looking at price. You save $10-$20 for a tiny plant. Pea size corm vs baseball/softball size pup corm? Most...

Re: Which to plant

I bought a whole tray of the TC VC last year. 72 plants now in the ground! I noticed instantly they were for sure not VC so didn’t sell any. I reported the issue and warned other sellers. It is not a...

Re: Anyone growing Thai Black?

I’ve never lost a corm here planted outside. Including this year when it hit 7F! Just mulch/hay for protection. Not much. Since it’s a true Musa Balbisiana I would hope it would be fairly cold hardy!...

Re: Plant with translucide holes in the leaf

It’s an Ensete ventricosum Maurelii

They are a cousin to Musa (bananas). They are actually called the “false banana”. They do not send up pups or make actual fruit. They make a flower and more of...

Re: How hot is too hot for Bananas? Anyone try shade nets?

I’m in about the same climate and keep 99% of my Musa in full sun. I’m talking large plants in ground. Anything in pots I keep in 50% shade cloth. Smaller stuff under 70% cloth. As long as they get...

Re: Question about Banana Mats/Corms

I agree. Just keep between 2-4 pstems per mat for max growth. Basjoo can be a heavy pupper so don’t butcher the corm or anything. I always look at the pstem/coem/pups as a pizza cut into 4 quarters....

Congrats Erik! Just curious did this one ever make it? Hope the next one is a little earlier in the year! How big was it spring 2020 when it was planted out?

These are amazing growers for me also!...

Musa meKong giant has been proven to be a Musa itinerans var. itinerans. I actually have both them and itinerans var itinerans from seed. You can’t tell them apart!

They are very cool and beautiful...

Re: Seasonal Influence on bunch size

I do get smaller early spring blooms but normally by May/June they are normal. I always assumed it was due to winter stress on the plant.

Try removing a pup or 2 and once they are growing pick a...

Re: Question about Banana Mats/Corms

Large/older mats usually require a lot of fertilizer and water! I notice for the first 5-7 years they do great but seem to really drop off after awhile. I have researched every aspect of cycle speed...

Re: Fruiting Bananas in North Alabama

I would recommend dwarf Orinoco or dwarf Brazilian. The dwarf namwa should do great also. With dwarf Orinoco the min temp you need to shoot for is about 26f.

Good luck. Also remember do not water...
