Foot candles is better for human lighting needs. PAR or instantaneous light in micromoles (μmol) are better for plants.

Collards are a biennial or perennial. Yes we eat our collards. I also grow Yellow Cabbage Collards. They are the best tasting collards out there. Not really yellow, just light green.
