Not much has changed in rural Florida.
![]() In high school I had a poster.... "In case siren sounds, immediately 1. Crawl beneath desk, table, or other sturdy object. 2. Place your head between your knees. 3. Cover your head with your hands 4. Kiss your @$$ goodbye. In all seriousness, it may seem like taking cover would be useless in the event of a nuclear detonation. While that would be true out to a certain distance, there is a range beyond that where buildings may sustain damage but not be, um, you know, vaporized. Someone, somewhere, will be far enough away that they could survive the blast but have a roof fall on them, be cut by flying debris, etc.

Actually, there are several and a few new ones popping up all over, and YES, the funky chunky fat boy with the overalls and burger on plate still is around.. He is alive and well in a few of them, including outside of the one in Victorville (like the old days) and in the entryway of the one in Glendale. The best part, is that you can still buy the Big Boy Plastic Piggy Bank, you can still get the AMAZING Big Boy Seasoned Salt!!.... and T-Shirts too. Bob's Big Boy probably won't ever completely die in California, because this is where it all started, and as long as there are people who remember... there will be a Big Boy here. ![]()

Oh man, that seasoned salt was the best! I poured that on ketchup & dunked my fries in that too. The hot fudge sundaes always had the hot fudge on the side in the ramekin. Don't remember the hot fudge cake (?). I think they were just starting the piggy banks but I don't remember Tshirts here. Do they still bake those strawberry pies? Had great pies!
When I turned 18 I applied at a few restaraunts & one served alcohol..the manager told me to work at Marc's Big Boy because they gave good training, & then come back when I was 21. They were very disciplined & expected a lot from employees. Uniforms had to be perfect. Wasn't hard for me - I went to catholic school. Oh yeah, they had a franchise to sell the Colonals Kentucky Fried Chicken at all the big boys here. My Dad really loved it when I brought a bucket of left over chicken home. Any way, could I buy some seasoned salt & blue chees dressing from them thru you? Or, should I buy a franchise & open a big boy here LOL. Ha..."Patty's Big Boy" LOL. So nice to know they are still there - where they originated.

Hot Fudge Cake... Do you remember the vanilla ice cream sandwiched between chocolate cake, whipped cream & cherry? My sis used to get that JUST so she could get the fudge sauce to dip fries left over from the Combo. It seems rather odd to me that you can't get Big Boy dressing and season salt, because it's practically at every grocery store around. They still have their amazing 1000 island, the Ranch, and the YUMMY Roquefort, and Bleu Cheese in the refrigerated section.. YUM! I've even seen it in the Latino Markets "Roberto's Grande Boy" - kidding - But actually, I am thinking you can get the dressing at Costco, because my cousin in Lansing, MI gets it there, and they used to have "Elias Brother's Big Boy" chain up there. You may even be happy to know that it's now open when you visit Honolulu next time!: opener I found a link to someone who can send you the seasoning salt. Write to: merchandising@bigboy.com Let me know if you have any trouble, because I can go by BBB (excuse, right) and pick up some for you (how many do you want?) in a couple weeks or so, and I'll have a Big Boy Combo in your honor. ![]()

I just read some from my search. Big Boy is still hot in CA, Michigan & Ohio. It said the Marc's big boy here, ILL, MN & Iowa are now Perkins. I'll have to check it out. I don't think anyone here younger than 25-30 even knows of it. Nothing sold in grocery stores here from BB. I'll check it out more later.
Make sure you get that side of bleu for the fries when you order that combo!

Don't laugh, but there's still a couple left open! There's one in downtown LA, and one somewhere around Arcadia - West Covina area.
Same amazing biscuits and same amazingly unhealthy super crispy chicken! lol It beat out KFC any day. This look familiar? lol ![]()

You people are making me soooo hungry!
Cheryl, I'd kill right now for a brawny lad or a swiss miss! Good thing we never had 'Pioneer' chicken or I'd kill for that too. Ha ha, when they show fat guys holding up a platter of their food, it must be good! ![]()

I clearly remember something called a 5-star bar, which has since gone out of production. Also Eat-Mores. Carrots used to taste excellent, and when I left Canuckistan they were just these large bland orange things (since Ecuador, they're back to the spicy orange flavourbombs of my youth). And cauliflower in mom's white sauce.
But what I really find myself reminiscing over is a fresh-caught Arctic Char on the grill, or else Mooseburgers. |

I'M TELLING!!!
I've had moose, antelope, elk & buffalo burgers. They are all good, but venison burgers are crap! Only venison steaks & slow cooked roasts are good but their ground meat is only good in chili.

Trust me there are ways to make every kind of game (except Caribou) not only edible but super pallatable as well. As far as burgers, adding a bit of beef or pork(my favorite) fat is the key as most game dries out too quickly. |

I COMPLETELY forgot about the corn!! ![]() The big stainless steel (pre-hotdog) roller... back and forth... back and forth... yum! Such a heart attack! However, I DO remember now buying a side of Gizzards and dipping them in ketchup, thinking they were healthy because grandma used to order them! LOL - the German members are probably laughing right about now... like their ketchupdogs... sausages made out of anything from the beast. ![]()

Back before there was a McDonalds, Burger king etc in Northern NJ we had two great places around here. Stewarts which was famous for their root beer and is still around(but the food isn't as good anymore....it probably wasn't then either) and the best one was called Wetsons. They had a golden arch before McDonalds had the golden arches as far as I know and basically their only claim to fame was burgers, fries and thick shakes. We used to travel 20 minutes or so each way to get there as there wasn't really much fast food around in the late 60's..........of course the hippie ckicks serving the food didn't hurt the ambience for little me back then either I suppose.
