Too low for Cuys - that's only 1200 m of elevation. Cuy start appearing at about 1800 m and go up from there. You're bang on about the Puma habitat, though. The colour variant in Loja is sort of a lilac blue; they're very attractive cats.

You see Beth, if you came from Europe, you would have known. It is rumored, that the retreating Roman army hid an incredible treasure somewhere in the Biokovo mountain pass, while defending their last villages from the invasions of Croats. They chose the only place that Southern Croats feared the most: snowy and icy mountain tip. And so each generation of Makarians goes to the mountains at least once in their lives to celebrate the conquering of this country and searching for the Roman treasure.

got ya!!!

Any and all persons, events or names are completely fictional, it is actually a plot of one not so well directed movie with Nicholas Cage.

There's a similar region in Ecuador, the Llanganates, where the retreating Incan general Ruminahui is said to have dumped the entire contents of the city of El Dorado (present-day Cuenca), some 15+ tonnes of gold. Still doesn't really want to make me visit the snow.

And I'm not kidding.

Jack, if you'd ever moved from close to the Arctic Circle to the heart of the tropics, you'd understand what I'm talking about.

I'd beg to differ - there's a whole belt of paradise-type places around latitude 0.

If I ever moved to the tropics, it would no longer be me.
For millenia Europeans have lived here, even though there were other, maybe more acceptable places with warmer and more humid climate. This climate of ours, the way of life in temperate and colder climates is so different... we have to adapt, work harder to survive - something that Inca, Mayans and other cultures of tropical regions all over the world didn't have to do. That's why they belong to the past.

Who says the Inca are in the past? The Quichua-speaking peoples are the same culture; the word "Inca" simply means "ruler." They've adapted, just not to a new climate - to new religion, a new language, and new rulers. (And in most cases, they've actually forced those things to adapt to them.)

I'm originally Canadian, Jack, from close to the Arctic circle, so I know all about adapting to the climate. Genetically, I'm of Scots/Viking ancestry. Moving hasn't changed who I am, it's just made my feet warmer in December and made it easier for me to grow bananas.

Yeah, but Ante, I can make that here. I still don't see any need to willingly expose myself to sub-zero temperatures.

Hm, Ante might have been there to kill 91% of know bacteria. Gotta, can't do that in tropical climate. :P
