Default Lager beers

I don't care for the bitterness in Pale Ales, the overly smooth and sweet taste in Pilsners, or the lack of body to Cervezas produced south of the border here. Basically, the taste of American Budweiser has been ingrained on my taste buds for many decades for better or worse. But I keep looking for improvements in that flavor category and happily there are many.

So today I bought a few 1/2 liters of Karlovačko. What a great lager. No wonder it is the 5th river of Croatia.

Never had that one Richard, Don't much care for bud or miller products.
I would highly recommend The lagers and pretty much any beer from Sam Adams .
Might cost a little more but well worth it!

Don't care for traditional Miller products either. Out here the Sam Adams runs about the same as imports ... can't say the taste is worth the price.

Budweiser was my beer for many years till the calories caught up with me in my 40's. Tried Bud lite and the taste was awful. Was really amazed that Bud tasted so good and their lite was dog water.

Then tried Miller lite and it has been my go-to ever since. Now and then a foreign import hits the spot. Such as German Spaten and Egyptian Stella.

Thanks again Scott, I did try the Samuel Adams Boston Lager this evening. For my tastes, it's about half lager and half ale. Not quite what I'm looking for. Price wise, it's less expensive than the Karlovecko - about $10 will buy you 50 fl.oz. of the latter vs. 72 fl.oz. of the former at my local BevMo.

Sorry you didn't appreciate it. I had my first in a frosty mug last summer after a long sweaty day, on tap I might add.
Karlovecko is tough to find here, let you know when i taste one what I think.
what format do you get 50 and 72 fl.oz.?
Here it's pretty much a case, a six pack, a quart or a keg, 1/4 or 1/2.
If you are still looking try a Yuengling lager if you can find it there. Oldest brewery and local here.

72 fl.oz. = 1 six-pack of 12 fl.oz. bottles.
50 fl.oz. = 3 half-liter bottles.

Interesting background on Yuengling -- a German named brewery: Yuengling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I brought home several lagers suggested by "the beer guy" at our local BevMo. Today I'm trying Kona Brewing Co. Longboard Island Lager. I'd say it is ever-so-slightly smoother than Budweiser or Karlovecko. Not necessarily a quality I was looking for, but to me a likeable lager which apparently is available on tap at restaurants in the area. The alcohol content is listed at 4.6%, in comparison to 5% of the other two.

Today I'm trying Żywiec beer from Poland. Sold here in 1/2 liter bottles, 5.6% alcohol. Excellent tasting lager in my opinion.

Like many German beers, Beck's Sapphire is a Pilsner. For my tastes, they are the cream soda of beers.

Over the weekend I tried "Golden Pheasont" from Slovakia. A bit smoother, not quite as crisp. I'd give it an A-.

Next on the sampling list: Zhigulevskoye lager beer from Baltica Brewery in St. Petersburg, Russia. (Alternate spellings: Zhigulevskoje, Zhigulevskoe). At my local BevMo it is sold in 1/2 liter bottles. It has a thinner taste - reminds me of Brew 102 from L.A. The alcohol content is 4.0%.

Tonight I paired off Żywiec beer from Poland with "Baltika Grade 9 Extra Lager" from St. Petersburg Russia. At 8% alcohol by volume it's a serious lager and the taste is up there with the Żywiec.

I've been drinking an excellent lager for the last week called Nastro Azzurro. Started in Palermo and ended up in Rome.

It's a 5.1% alcohol by volume pale lager. The Peroni brewery's premium lager brand which was launched in 1963. The name means "Blue Ribbon" in Italian. Great beer with lunch or dinner.

Found it. Thanks for the pointer -- it is excellent. Right up there with the Żywiec Lager.

Coming in at a close second is the Karlovačko and the Baltika Grade 9.

Pricewise here locally:
Nastro Azzuro - $8.29 per 6-pack of 33cl bottles ~= $0.124 / fl.oz.
Baltika Grade 9 - $2.49 per 1/2 liter ~= $0.147 / fl.oz.
Żywiec Lager - $3.49 per 1/2 liter ~= $0.2064 / fl.oz.
Karlovačko - $3.49 per 1/2 liter ~= $0.2064 / fl.oz.

But watch out! That Baltika #9 is 8% compared to the 5% in the others!!
